The late great college basketball coach John Wooden once said there was too much overcoaching in the modern game of basketball. That is exactly how I feel about present day NFL. Far too many NFL head coaches and coordinators want to be seen as geniuses on TV and radio. Its sickening to see the stunts these guys pull every Sunday.

Its really hard getting a W against any opponent on any given day, what’s really harder is losing but only because you out-think yourself. Without getting too much into details, more and more games are being lost because coaches try too hard to outsmart their counter parts. The biggest case in point well, was the last play of the Super bowl earlier this year. When you have the ball at opponents 1yardline and all you have to do is get in to win, with one of the best running back in your back field. You run it, right ? That is conventional wisdom and something the coaches are getting away from.

Anybody remember the Dallas- NY Giants game couple of weeks back? Whatever happens to keeping it simple? I am so convince the dolphins lost to the Jaguars partly because of the timeout debacle. Please don’t get me started on Philbin. Chuck pagano ?? WTF!!!!!!!!!! Wait, wait there's more. I watched a little bit of the Bills-Bengals' game and I saw Mario freaking Williams dropping into coverage. Are you serious? Jimmy Graham pass blocking ? Sammy Watkins as a decoy...and so forth.

I miss the days when QBs ran the show, like Dan Marino running the two- minutes drill. What a thing of beauty. Today QBs look to the sideline for what to do next, or looking down at their wrists for “the script.” Players need to be playing, not thinking. It was absolutely pathetic watching the Dolphins defense for four games prior to Sunday's game. Games are practically being run as tightly as combine drills. Far too many coaches trying to justify their jobs.

MEMO TO COACHES DON'T COACH YOURSEVES OUT OF A JOB! KEEP IT SIMPLE, SILLY!!!

This can/should transfer into our daily lives as well.

Dude, excellent post...

Disagree completely.

The great coaches are what make the sport so great.

Don Shula, Bill Walsh, Chuck Noll, Bill Parcells, Jimmy Johnson, Bill Billichick those guys all add to the game.

Look at that busted, ridiculously stupid fake kick by the Colts the other night.

The Pats special teams were on it immediately, that is coaching.

When you see a great offensive showing it is due in no small part to coaching, defense as well though not to the same degree.

You just supported OP's point...

If that fake kick(called by the COACHING staff) didn't happen, that wonderful display of PLAYERS playing instinctively wouldn't have happened.

There's a difference between coaching a game and the coaching that goes on the rest of the week. I agree that coaches often micromanage and outsmart themselves during a game, as well as make their players too reliant on them on gamedays.

On the other hand, the Pats special teams knew what to do because they are extremely well-coached and prepared during the week.

Speaking of Bill Belichick, he is the one keeping it most simple. Last year, they were about to play the Colts mid season. The Colts had a terrible run defense at that point. Belichick inserted an extra lineman on most running plays and ran the **** out of them. He did not try to outsmart anyone, he kept it simple: they're a bad run D? OK, I'll make 100% sure we run it down their throats.

I've seen the DE drop back and create easy interceptions plenty of times enough to justify it. And where do you draw the line? Uptempo? Hard counts? For every failed "innovation" by coaching staffs there are also successes. Like Belichick and his ineligible receiver shenanigans in the playoffs. Or the fake spike.

I've seen Bilichick make his fair share of over coaching mistakes. Going for it on fourth down deep in his own territory late in the fourth quarter while leading is just one that comes to mind.

You are referring to the one against the Colts, on Sunday or Monday Night Football a few years back? That's the only time that comes to mind where it didn't work. Worked countless time.s Belichick is playing the percentages and he is rewarded more often than not.

The phins have had their share of risk adverse or micromanagers.

That said, there are many times when Kyle W here at the U of Utah will have episodes of Wannstedt-itis. Don't get me started about last yrs game vs Arizona here in SLC.

Whitt can occasionally surprise. There were several instances in the game against Oregon this yr as well as Saturday versus Az St.

Bottom line; Part of the secret of great coaching is not just about risk v reward but timing as well.
