This is my first time on the Phins board, being a Packer fan and all. I just thought I'd drop by and say hi. HI, that being said, I thought you should know, the Packers are now saying that everyone, except Joe Johnson and Mark Tauscher will be back for the MNF game. The defense is really coming together, and now we know (and they know) the rookies and backups can PLAY. Should be great, but if I were a Phins fan, I would pray that game time temp is above 40 degrees. Brett is unbeatable in GB under 40 degrees. Go figure, a guy from Mississippi can play so well, for so long in really cold temps. My prediction is a 24-14 Packer win.

you better hope Farve your entire franchise is mobile when Jason Taylor comes at him.

Hi and welcome.. I really don't think the temp is gonna make that much of a difference.. I think the big thing lies on the shoulders of Ray Lucas... If he plays as bad as he did it will be a blowout.. but if he can pull together and not make any mistakes... we should be in for a really good game..

that's for sure. I almost hope it so cold that the Fins just hand it off to Ricky all day long so that we do not need to see Lucas throwing it. Of course, once Chris Carter is out there w/Chambers I may be more antsy.

Would you call the Packs' D stong ag the Run ? or the Pass ? Neither ? Both ?

They have a bend don't break mentality right now. They are better against the pass, but the run D is improving.

I'd say both, with a caveat about each.

As for the run D, it has gelled over the last three weeks. Stephen Davis got some good yardage last week, but that came late in the game when we were more in a prevent mode. The caveat here is injuries. We have been missing Vonnie Holliday (DE), but he is due back Monday night; and our other DE, Joe Johnson was lost for the year one week after we lost Holliday.

The pass D is excellent. The cornerbacks have played well, and our safety situation is finally starting to settle down. The caveat here is injuries, too. Starting left corner Mike McKenzie, a viable Pro Bowl possibility, has missed the last three games with a strained groin. He is due to return Monday night. Free safety Darren Sharper, a Pro Bowler, has also been injured. He, too, will be ready by Monday-week.

The good thing about these injuries is that it has forced second and third string guys to the forefront, and they have done more than just perform adequately. Aaron Kampman, a rookie, has performed well in the place of Holliday, and will actually probably retain the starting job at least one more week, even though Holliday will play Monday. He is a tad undersized, but has a huge motor and never quits. He is always around the ball. Sounds like Jason Taylor a bit... he doesn't have that talent or those physical skills, but the kid is a player.

Losing Joe Johnson has forced us to press others into service, such as Steve Warren and Rod Walker... both who have performed very well. Last week, against Washington, we started Kabeer Gbaja-Biamilia (a.k.a. Kaboom, KGB), our pass-rushing specialist who we usually reserve only for passing downs. He held up well against the run, which made us happy. There is still a concern that he can hold up all season there, but if he starts against Miami, he will be plenty fresh after a week off, and especially since Sunday was only his first start. Finally, as to the D line, our #1 pick from the 2001 draft, DE Jamal Reynolds (Fla. St.) has SUCKED for two years. Until Sunday, that is. Against Washington, he fiiiiiiiiiinally looked like he was catching up with the pro game. Like I said, the D line has gelled very well of late.

Let me take a second and tell you about one the guys that got thrown into the fire in the defensive backfield: safety Marques Anderson, #20. This is a rookie from UCLA who has played VERY well in his time on the field. For his work Sunday-before-last against New England, he was named Rookie of the Week by the NFL, and was a final four nominee for the Dockers Defensive Player of the Week for the entire NFL (as was Jason Taylor, by the way). This kid is whip-smart on the football field, and brings the wood when he tackles. Our coaching staff is going to be living in denial if they keep him out of a starting job much longer, even when all our guys are healthy. He has CB-quality coverage skills, too. Keep an eye on him.

I know this sounds all rosy, and kind of fan-oriented; but honoestly, this D has really gotten better in the last month.

Your right, it WILL take more than just JT to beat the Packers...
So how about:
Jason Taylor +
Zach Thomas, Sam Madison, Patrick Surtain, Ricky Williams, Chris Chambers, Chris Carter, and Randy McMichael
...?

Hopefully those name plus Olindo Mare's leg and Travis Minor's break out kick returning skills will be enough to do the job.

I think its not the cold but rather the snow which would be a problem.

Against cold you can get dressed properly and the unit on the field is warmed up anyways.
Snow and sleat may be a problem.

The last part of that sentence is what scares me. The Packers ST has not played very well this year.

In regards to the Packers D, they have given up some yardage to teams, but they seem to come through at just the right moment. Even with all the injuries, they've been "bend don't break". They lead the NFL in takeaways and have played extremely well the last 4 weeks. The Packers also lead the NFL in turnover differential at a +12. I think the next closest team is +6. (I think it's the Dolphins, but I may be wrong)

It was the dolphins until they turned it over 6 times to the bills without getting any back, so now our ratio is 0.

Can I just vent?

No disrespect intended, but I promise you I will vomit if I hear one more sports commentator say "Oh, thank God Brett Favre is ok ... what would the NFL be without him ... Brett Favre IS football ... oooh, I want to lick his cleats!"

He is a GREAT player. One of the all-time best. But c'mon, they act as if a major injury to Favre would drain all sanctity from the game.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Football will go on when Favre retires, just like it did when Montana, Marino, and Elway retired. I do understand their point though (maybe not the cleat licking thing). The one constant in the NFL over the last decade is that Brett Favre will be under center every time the Packers take the field.
