Green Bay Packers officials don't plan to grant Brett Favre's request for release and remain committed to Aaron Rodgers as their starter, even if Favre returns to the team.

But in late March, coach Mike McCarthy and general manager Ted Thompson told the Associated Press, they were set to bring Favre back when he reversed course for the first time weeks after announcing his retirement.

In their first public comments since Favre demanded his release this week, Thompson and McCarthy said Favre changed his mind again as they were about to fly to Mississippi to seal the deal.

I can't believe they're going to make Favre come back and sit on the bench behind Rodgers if he wants to play. That's like if they had let Marino come back and sit behind Fiedler or Huard.:shakeno:

i sure would not like to go down in history as "the guy that cut, relaesed, traded or benched" brett farve. or to have to tell arron rodgers that yet again he is not the starting qb. if they let farve come back if i was rogers i would demand a trade or release.
give it a rest farve.. when i turn 90 i will still be able to screw(probly with the help of pills) but it doesn't meen i should. walk away from the game don't get carried off the field. as great a yr he had last yr theres really nothing else to prove. he was a surefire hall of famer yrs ago well known as one of the greatest to play the game, has tons of records and even got a superbowl ring. whats left to prove other than you can still play at 50?

not true since Marino was not ready to retire, and Wanny came in and told him he was not his QB. Favre retired, the Packers went several months preparing Aaron Rodgers to be starter, and drafted Brian Brohm and Matt Flynn to back him up. It is not fair to those 3 for them to go this long and then Favre decide he didn't want to retire after all.

How much do you want to bet that GB brings him back, Rodgers starts but is either ineffective or gets hurt and Favre comes in and they go 13-3.

Sigh :beer1:

Rally held to pressure Packers to reinstate Favre

Brett Favre's fans came to his defense Sunday, rallying outside Lambeau Field to pressure the Green Bay Packers to reinstate him as the starting quarterback.

The crowd of more than 100 chanted "We want Brett," and carried signs reading, "Favre for President" or "Favre Forever." Many in the parking lot wore No. 4 jerseys, tossed footballs and grilled.

"We've always appreciated the passion of our fans," the Packers said in a statement. Team spokesman Jeff Blumb said there would be no other comment.

They shouldnt cut him. They have to do whats best for the team.

They HAVE to start him. There is no question that Farve is 100 times better than Rodgers. The worst part about this when the team says that he will have to earn his spot back in camp. He took them to the playoffs last season. He would be the starter right now if he didnt hold a press conference a few months ago. Its a slap in the face to Farve, the team, and the fans. And for what? Rodgers? They arnt sold on him at all. He played part of 1 game in his entire carrer.

To me, it looks as if the packers were going to give Rodgers 1 season then decide if they should start the rookie QB. Now with farve comming back, they will have to wait another year to play that out. The ownership/coaches might not like that, but at least they have a shot at the playoffs again with farve.

I don't see any reason why they would bench Favre if he was still in a Green Bay uniform. That would not be in the best interest of the team. Maybe longterm they could figure some things out sooner, but for the upcoming season, they would be unecessarily handicapping themselves.

IMO, what he's doing right now is not fair to the Packers. Green Bay are refusing to release him, which I think is the right thing to do. If they can get something for him, go for it. The Packers owe Brett nothing and he deserves nothing in my opinion. He was paid millions for his services, what more does he deserve? He's a legend in his own mind and I think he's way too full of himself but he should stay retired to not tarnish his legacy any more.

I'm not sure what to think. The Packers front office goes to Mississippi to try to get him to come back, but Brett says he wants to stay retired. Now, the team has moved on, and all of the sudden, he wants to come back. And the whole Favre family is saying that the Packers were pushing him out the door, which is simply not true. The front office wanted him to come back and even went down to Mississippi to see him to try to work something out, but he didn't want to come back. Also, whenever Aaron Rodgers seems to get some nice, deserved attention and gets a nice write up in SI, Favre (pretty much) immediately comes out saying he wants to come back. I want to hear Brett Favre speak. I want to know what's going on because, simply, this is just one HUGE distraction for that football team with training camp just around the corner.

I think they're most scared of him coming back and getting picked up by a division rival. The Bears would probably be favorites to pick him up. I mean come on, they're heading for the #1 pick with Orton and Grossman, but still that offense is so stale all over, I doubt Favre would really want to play there. Atlanta will not happen. They just invested a fortune in Ryan. He's their QB. Baltimore is interesting. I don't really know who will start there right now. Smith has been impressive in mini camp and you've still got Boller, and then Flacco to come in at some point too. Their defense is still an elite one in the NFL and Favre and McGahee could make them an offensive threat too. It makes the most sense for Brett, if he comes back and they'd become instant contenders in that AFC North.

One team that hasn't been mentioned that could really use Brett is the Dallas Cowboys. This will surely not happen because the Cowboys are pretty much the fifth team in the NFC North as the Packers are concerned. Just Imagine Brett on the Cowboys, though. That would be one heck of a good football team and surefire Super Bowl favorites. It's just because I'm not sold on Romo.. If he could handle a snap, they would have been in the Super Bowl two years ago, IMO. They have older guys at some key positions and don't really have time to wait for Tony Romo to learn how to play in the playoffs. Romo needs to mature and what better way to do so then behind his former childhood idol. Just a thought. Dallas did have interest in Brett Favre about two years ago. Just throwing this out there. It definitely won't happen, but I think Dallas should be after Brett Favre as much as anybody.

All in all, I hope Brett stays retired. There's definitely no place for him on that Packer team. He will not be a backup. Brett would not do that, plus, it would just create a huge media distraction. Even if Aaron goes down again the distractions would be huge if Brett went under center. Green Bay has moved on, and if they allow Brett to come back this year, they could be facing this same situation for years to come. They have to shut the door now while it's just barely open instead of opening it back up.

Yea.. Brett Farve was great. But this whole maybe i will, maybe I won't thing he's done the past few seasons is getting really tired.

You had kewl send off.. It's time.

That will not happen. if favre would have returned to the pack, he would mos def be the starter for atleast 1 or 2 more seasons. Just today there was a report were favre said, he was gonna stay retired, thank god this nightmare is over for packer fans..
