Panthers forward Richard Zednik had blood gushing from a deep cut on the right side of his neck after being struck by a teammate's skate during the third period of Florida's game against Buffalo on Sunday night.

Zednik was behind the play and skating into the right corner of the Sabres' zone, when teammate Olli Jokinen was upended by Sabres defenseman Brian Campbell. Jokinen fell head-first to the ice, and his right leg flew up and struck Zednik directly on the side of the neck.

Clutching his neck, Zednik immediately raced to the Florida bench, leaving a long trail of blood. A Sabres trainer jumped on the ice to apply a towel across the player's neck, and Zednik was immediately escorted to the Panthers' dressing room.

the good news is as pointed out in the article, it appears Zednik is going to be okay. I'm sure that was quite the scary scene...

I was watching this game, that was just bad. The blood just poured out of his neck. At least he was able to get up and go straight to the bench. It did not look good at all.

It may sound gruesome but I'm going to have to see this.

The worst was Clint Malarchuk. I remember that one to this day. The WIKI article on it covers a little more the that Yahoo one. Malarchuck would have died if his team trainer had not been a Vietnam army medic.

It is surprising it does not happen more often to be honest. You have 180-250 pound men moving very fast with razors attached to their feet.

Was this the goalie/throat incident? I remember seeing the tv broadcast online and you could just tell it was bad based off the audio. But blood was everywhere. It was gruesome.

Heres the video for those who havent seen it.

The latest update I've heard is that surgery was a success and is resting peacefully. He is responding to everything that is coming his way and seems to be doing good. His wife and daughter were flown in by the Panthers last night to Buffalo and he has been able to meet with his daughter post surgery.

I was actually at the Drive-Thru at Mickey D's listening to this game on 790. Randy Moeller and Billy Lindsay were hysterical. I knew it had to be bad from their reaction. Lindsay kept saying "Oh no, Oh God." Moeller was screaming to get him off the ice. Pretty scary stuff, I wish RZ a full, speedy recovery.

They didnt get it on the broadcast, and its too graphic.

I was watching the game, my whole family was sheding to teats. Being a huge Cats fan, it was even worse. I hope Zed gets better, and I dont care hes not gonna play this entire season. Dont care about the score either. Please get better! Go to the Panthers board: forums.floridapanthers.com where everyone is right now talking about this

I watched the broadcast of the game and it was done tastefully, IMO. Just from hearing a local radio show talk about and fans calling in who were at the game; it was really brutal. When working for my degree I actually had a class where we looked at the Malarchuck cut. Many news stations did not show the blood. From watching the Buffalo broadcast, I didn't see the cameras focus in on the blood which I though was appropriate.

One of the Sabres medics who helped Zednik was on of the guys who also helped Kevin Everett. Really happy both are ok, but seriously that guy is man of the year.
