I just was it on espn's bottom line while watching the redsox/phillies game.

This is bad news, i want him in the rotation, idk who will be the #5 starter now until lester comes back

EDIT: Delete this, i wasn't thinking, i shoulda put it in the Redsox thread

Duh. I thought they would make the move in May. Well, March they did it. Earlier than I thought. They had to do it though.

The Sox bullpen is a mess. At least now they got somewhat of a sure thing back their closing. That starting rotation ain't anything special either. You got a 40 year old Schiling who wasn't great last year and will be breaking down even more. A huge question mark in Dice-K. "Blisters Beckett" and hsi 5.01 ERA last year. Welcome to the American League Blisters!! Wakefield who ya never know what you will get plus he is a little long in the tooth. And esentially no 5th starter to speak of unless Lester recovers and that is a question mark there too. The middle relief sucks. At least they got a closer. But this is the same closer who melted late last year and blew back to back saves to KC and Tampa down the stretch when Boston was still in the race. And Papelbon won't have another season like last year. Yet this is a move they had to make.

Boston with that lineup will win their 90+ games and be in the playoff race. If Francona had a brain he would bat Youklis leadoff and Drew 2nd. Those two draw more walks than anyone and would set the table for the big guys. Batting Drew 5th is a HUGE MISTAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The guy is a soft player and in a big spot would rather draw a walk than take a big cut. He has a history and track record of this!!!! Ya signed Drew for his OB%, so put him in a spot where that matters!!!! Not batting 5th!

Thank you!

(and yes I know the Yanks have a ton of flaws too......but I'm keeping this subject on topic)

Yes the rotation has question marks, but what rotation doesn't have question marks?? Beckett looked great this spring and should drastically lower the ERA. Dice K is looking amazing in spring and really fooling the hitters, After the at bats the hitters have said they have no idea what some of the pitchers where. Yes schilling is old and might break down but if not we have a very good rotation. Wakefield is solid, not great but a solid innings eater. And the 5th starter won't pitch but a few times until we get Lester back.

Now if all the things go wrong in the rotation like you said then ya we would be in trouble, but if things go right its gonna be a very good rotation

looks like tavaras will be the 5th starter until lester comes back in july, what happen to matt clement, did the soxs cut him or is he hurt too. papelbon will be great at the closer, peter gammons said this morning that his shoulder is stronger than it's ever been.

Clement is still injured

Clement is out for the year I understand

The Sox starters will be good enough. That bullpen (minus the closer now) is a disaster though and could be their downfall. Either way they will win their 90+ and be in the playoff race if not the playoffs!

No they won't!

Either way this is a mistake by the Red Sox. Hello, the Doctors told them it would not be good for his arm if he stayed in the bullpen. I don't care how much stronger his arm is this year, Papelbum pitching 75+ games a year just isn't good for his arm. It doesn't give his arm enough rest and all the warming up and actual pitching he's going to do this year is going to hurt him. There is a reason why Papelbum wanted to start and why his doctors said it would be best for him to start, why are the Red Sox playing with this? The Red Sox should have done the right thing and went out and either A. Given up some prospects for a closer or B. They should have signed Gagne or someone during the off-season. Being a closer is a lot more of a grind then people think. I hate the people out there calling closers weak because they pitch only one inning nowadays. While getting a save may be easier today because you only have to get 3 outs instead of 4, 5, or 6+, no-one who is good at closing games can be considered weak (in a baseball sense). I have no doubt that if healthy Papelbum will do a good job closing games for the Red Sox. I don't think he'll be as untouchable as he was last year but I also still think he'll be one of the best closers in the game. The question is health and that has to be a major concern here. Look what happened to Prior. The Cubs tested their limits with him and he's a mess now. I know he's a starter and Bum's a closer but I'm saying it in the context of these franchise's playing with a young pitchers arm. Papelbum's arm will be a lot better off with 4 days off in-between starts as opposed pitching 3 or 4 times a week. I may be wrong with this situation but we saw what happened to the guy last year after a lot of use. I will be surprised if he doesn't have a stint on the DL this year, real surprised. And no I'm not wishing it, just saying I think he will spend some time on the DL!

While I agree with this post almost completely about P-A-P-E-L-B-O-N, as I would rather have him as a starter, except for you thinking they won't be in the playoff race or win 90 games. Last year they won 86 games with guys like Ortiz, Manny, Papelbon, Varitek, Schilling, Lester, Wakefield, Wily Mo, Nixon, Coco, Wells etc out for an extended periods of time (yes I know you'll say 'oh so and so' sucks anyway but trust me 'so and so's replacement was a lot worse). The Sox upgraded their starting rotation with Matsuzaka and their pen with Donnelly, Pineiro and Romero (yes the pen still stinks but it stinks less with those guys now replacing Timlin, Saenez, Riske and company). They added a SS, Lugo, who can hit and a RFer in Drew who's an upgrade over the Nixon/Kapler/Mohr platoon.

For arguement sake let's just say that the none of the starters (hitting and pitching) miss as much time as they did last year, you can't tell me that this team isn't a 90 win team and will be fighting for a playoff spot. And that's also considering that none of the other AL East teams really upgraded that much if at all this off season.

So I'd love to hear your reasons why the Red Sox won't win 90 games or be in the playoff race.

Um it was Papelbon's decision. He went to management and told them he wanted to close, he said he thinks is shoulder is strong enough.

Well this is where WE part company. It's naive to think this decision was Papelbons! Seriously. This was a front office decision and to think otherwise is putting your head in the sand. The bullpen stinks and they have no closer. Then you gotta take into account its easier to make this switch NOW rather than in May, June, July...etc. And maybe the front office just felt this kid wouldnt be a very good starting pitcher and they know he is a good closer so why weaken 2 places when you can just put him at the back end of the pen and have no worry's. And find another starter anywhere.

But this notiont hat Papelbon made this choice is just laughable!!
