Pretty neat article on White. Thought you might like.

“I was at a spring training baseball game and was seated next to Dan Jennings (the Marlins’ vice-president of player personnel and assistant general manager). We got to talking, and he told me he was from Daphne, Ala., and he asked if we had any interest in the kid from West Virginia,” Parcells recalled.
He told Jennings that they were thinking about Pat White, although at the time White wasn’t a large blip on their radar.
“He spoke really highly of him,” Parcells said. “His father was a football coach there. We talked at length about him. Funny, isn’t it? I was just taking in a baseball game. You never know.”

this is the link (i dont have enough post, sorry)

“He demonstrated qualities that are rare in a collegiate player. I don’t know what it was, but at the end of the day it seemed his team wound up winning. Physically, he is not a prototypical NFL quarterback. His height is not prototypical of an NFL quarterback. His weight is not prototypical of an NFL quarterback. But his athletic abilities are superior.”

That little nugget there is why I think / predict that Pat White will win the #2 QB job over Henne (in addition to being the Wildcat) and will play games for us this season (working under the unfortunate assumption that Penny will get injured) as our starting QB and wildcat QB.

It's not that I think Henne is a bust (I do think Henne will develop) but I just think that Pat will move the offense in camps and preseason and show much more production than Henne who couldn't really even separate himself from the likes of John Beck and Josh McCown last year.

Idk, I just have a feeling (yes, partly b/c of Mike Mayoch's ringing endorsement) that Pat White will be a real deal starting NFL QB - Randall Cunningham style at Drew Brees size.:woot:

Anyway, I'll be rooting for Pat and both our Chads.:hi5:

I'll be rooting for Brennan Marion (who now says he already is running faster than the 4.53 he posted at the combine even though he is only 5 months removed from the torn ACL). :woot:

I'll be rooting for one of our young o-linemen (Ndukwe, Garnder, Frye, Quinn, Lewis) to step up if Donald Thomas can't. :err:

And I'll also be rooting for Mike Vick to break his focking neck. :rimshot:

I wouldn't make that assumption just yet. While I do agree that White could very well be the #2 QB, I don't think that it be because he beat out Henne. He will be in that position to be on the field in the Wildcat unless he is listed as a WR. Henne couldn't win the starting job last year because he was a ROOKIE. He did separate himself from Beck in the preseason by moving the ball and Beck was benched and never saw the field again. Henne is the future of this team. If he wasn't, he wouldn't be here.
He has tweaked his throwing motion and footwork this offseason and is ready to step up if needed. If Pennington were to go down, Henne would be the QB to take over. NOT White. If it happened in a game situation, White might take those snaps because of the wildcat, but in a long term situation (2+ games) Henne would start those games.

If White is running the wildcat from what was ronnies position, and he is productive, and Pennington happens to go down I'm not so sure they wouldnt just stick with White until he proved he couldn't do it. At this point, a few wildcat snaps and White will already have more NFL game experience than Henne.

I may be wrong here...but White hasn't played in the wildcat...in fact the wildcat is an off shoot of the spread offense...of which White did run at West Virginia.

The difference between the two are these...in the wildcat...the running back handles the football...and the O-line is over-loaded, in the spread the QB handles the football and the O-line either plays normal or spread's out to make gap's for either the QB or running back.

Whites advantage is in the spread offense...not the Wildcat. So look for more receiver sets...4 or 5...and also look for O-linemen that can move and adjust, to get down field.

I think that will be determined in camps and preseason. I don't think it's anywhere near settled yet. I like Henne too - certainly not rooting against him.

It is true that Pat might be on the game day roster as the active #2 just b/c of his participation in the wildcat and Henne may have to be put as the emergency #3 just due to roster constraints and not due to any knock on Henne.

We'll see....

pat white, to me, looks a lot like the luxury pick the bears made in 2006 with devin hester in the second round...

they/we drafted the player because of his special abilities. Obviously, white has that versatility thing going his way, according to some (i don't see him as a WR, nor as a PR or KR... i see him as a QB and wildcat weapon)

let's just hope our investment pans out like the hester pick...

I wouldn't necessarily call a guy like Hester a "luxury pick". I know he is just a RS (although MAYBE he'll develop more as a WR now with Cutler in town) but when you're THAT GREAT of a RS and you change the game so, so, so much, then you're worth the risk in round 2.

As for White, yes - he is a QB/WC more so than a WR/RS.

If all White ever does for us is play WC, then yeah - kind of a luxury pick (depending on how much impact he has running the ball from the WC and how much he runs the ball possibly in place of a feaured back like Ronnie in the future).

But if he was really brought in to compete as a REAL QB with Henne, then it's a need pick too and follows the Trio's strategy of double drafing need positions...

Langford/Merling
Turner/Hartline
Parmele/Hilliard
Murphy/Thomas
Henne/White

Definitely a pattern here.

ummmm good point!

I thought of it as they just picked the best player....before need.

I guess who they felt was the best player.....at that time in the draft.

that is also true...look at the guys picked between white and our other 2nd rounder... there wasn't anything special there ... one or two OLBs were interesting, and that's it
