Parker or Williams?

Am I the only one who thinks Williams is so over rated on this board? He has a few special catches otherwise he drops a ton of balls.
Not to mention he is never available. That should also be considered when evaluating him

I can't disagree that he has missed a lot of time, but I'm pretty sure a torn ACL one season and a weird season ending foot injury the next aren't indicators of future season-ending injuries.
Why would you be so sure of that? This guy hasn’t proven he can stay healthy, and he has had leg and foot injuries, not something like a hand or shoulder. I think those injuries could be very related.

At the end of the day, who knows? What I will tell you is that we have more competiion at that position than I remember in decades and I wouldn’t be surprosed if his spot isn’t taken up by a r different who is unjury etc. C.

as i said in another thread, if he suffers another season ending injury for a third season in a row, i'm going to search his locker for voodoo dolls.

I made this analogy of PW early in his rookie year.

He can amaze in the most unexpected moments. Then break your heart when you need him the most. His potential tantalizes people out of logic.

I'd give him one more year to step outside of the "injury" and "drops" labels, then cut bait.

I say that because DVP has developed some professional habits over the course of his career that have helped him become more "reliable" (I hesitate to cement that label).

PW needs one more chance to at least find his role on this team....

But glimmers of greatness are just that.. glimmers. He has a spot on this team if his availability can become less of a problem.
Agree. I'm def on the Parker side of this "debate," but I think some are being a bit hard on a guy that was showing a good amount of promise his rookie year until we stupidly had our 6'5 #2 WR return a punt.

And regarding the catch numbers...

Devante rookie year 52%
Preston rookie year 53.3%

Neither of those numbers are acceptable. But too many here show a pattern of being too hard on young players, especially ones recovery from serious injury IMO.

I'm really not down w trying to compare Preston to Devante. But I want to give him one more year to show us if he can improve. Parker did.

I've seen Preston do things in his first 2 years (albeit in camp sometimes) that i have never seen Parker do (camp included) and Preston is bigger, longer and stronger. He was 10 months from an acl tear last year when he was playing. i expect big things this year from him, certainly bigger things than i expect from parker.

You like the potential in Preston and you severely undervalue how good Parker already is.

He's had like 8 seasons and 1 thousand yard season.

I'll give him credit for being an elite high pointer of the ball / jump ball specialist. But I've seen Preston drop 3 or 4 defensive backs in about 1 year, at 6'5 I think that's special (granted mostly potential like you said).

I agree. He has high potential, but he doesn’t have the best hands. I would keep Parker over Williams if forced to make the choice, but honestly, I wouldn’t be upset if we replaced both. DVP misses too much time and Williams just doesn’t have the same overall talent.

Here are the game logs through the 1st 8 games for PW and DVP...

Guess which is PW and which is DVP...

But there is more :)

Here is the context for the two games PW had more than 2 catches this year:

SFO: The 49ers were missing several DBs (Johnson, Moseley, Williams) due to injury and activated Brian Allen off of the practice squad the day before the game. Fitzpatrick like any veteran QB would do threw to which ever WR was being covered by Allen. When Allen was playing man on the boundary vs PW he got torched. When Allen was matched up with DVP he got torched. I believe the 49ers benched him at halftime putting in a DB with a hamstring issue. This was the only game action Allen played all year.

ARI: The Cardinals were missing several DBs (Kirkpatrick - injury and Murphy - COVID related) and PW was mostly matched up with Peterson. No, not Patrick Peterson it was Kevin Peterson. Kevin Peterson was a special teams player and got his only start of the year, really only game action other than ST. Like any good QB would do, Tua targeted PW when covered by Kevin. On PW’s TD the Cards left him all alone around the 5 yard line.

If the claim is the PW is better when he is being covered by PS and ST players than DVP is when covered by legitimate starting CBs then I would probably agree with statement.

I honestly had high hopes for PW. I recall X talking him up during training camp his rookie year. PW's first preseason game was his best game imo. He made three excellent catches. But has been highly inconsistent ever since.

In his rookie year PW dropped several TD passes. This past year PW dropped a TD pass on 4 and 1 in the endzone in the 3rd quarter against the Bills in which Miami lost 31-28.

PW was manhandled against the Patriots and what doesn't go on his stat sheet is that he fell down on a break resulting in and interception and fell down on a scramble by Fitz in which he wisely chose to take a sack as a result.

Besides the drops and the falls, PW also has terrible habit of trying to jump on passes that would hit him in his numbers in order to basket-catch the ball.

PW reminds me of Chris Chambers who some fans thought was great. Both can make spectacular catches, but those get negated by the poor plays. QBs only completed 48.7% of passes throwing to CC during his career and so far QBs only complete 52.6% of their passes when throwing to PW. If you took out the two games in which PW was primarily covered with a PS and ST player getting their only game action in the secondary that completion % drops down below 50%.

The idea that PW outplayed or became the primary over DVP is not grounded in reality. There were a couple of games in which matchups were favorable to throw him the ball but nothing more than that.
damn what an informative post!

Thanks to all my Phin brothers/sisters for their comments. For me, Parker is a better player now, but I think Williams might close the gap somewhat this year. The big decision will be a financial one after this season. If they both play well (and stay healthy), but its close, Williams is the far cheaper option. It would be great to keep them both, but I doubt that will happen. There is a lot riding on this season for both of them.

both are replaceable. there is nothing special about none of them.
