Playoffs? Playoffs?!
The Jaguars have one of the worst pass defenses in the league. Mostly it's because they're unable to generate any kind of pressure with their front four at all. Jacksonville is last in the league in sacks, and their adjusted sack rate (which considers not only gross sack numbers, but related to the number of pass downs they've faced) is also dead last by a full percentage point. (If you're curious, we're #1). They are, however, pretty good at stopping the run, rating #13 in the league in Adjusted Line Yards.
All in all, they're ranked third worst against the pass, and third best against the run. They're particularly bad against starting WRs, suggesting their coverage problems lie with their corners. Mathis' absence is very hurtful, I suppose.
Given our own defensive deficiencies (28th against the run) it's pretty obvious we could end up looking up in the scoreboard if we don't set a good offensive pace early. I realize this might seem like overreaction to Henne's good outing last Sunday, but it's just a coincidence that we have two good matchups in the passing game in consecutive weeks. Tennessee might be a different story (they're currently 26th, but that New England game weighs heavily against them, and we can all agree they're not the same team), but Houston also offers a good matchup there.
We should come out slinging this week. And we would be better off if we do, than trying to establish a smashmouth game plan against one of the league's better run defenses.
Note: All stats are from football outsiders, though some are only available for Premium members (like adjusted sack rate).
