I know our running game was winning the battles all day long, and I do in fact think that we should have ran it on that play. However, it was not such an awful call at the time. An awful result it was but not necessarily a bad call. Its 3rd and 2 they're stacking the box, expecting us to run and we pass. Not a bad idea. And if you consider the situation, it was 4 down territory. So bascially the only thing that couldn't of happened did. In the coaches mind it was a high percentage completion pass and if it was completed, first down. If not, pound it for the first on 4th down. This loss is not on Linehan, it is on Frerottes bonehead play, forcing the ball down there.

i agree.

i noticed the falcans throwing on 3rd and short a lot. and they are supposed to have the best running offense in the NFL.

you have to keep the D guessing. nothing wrong with taking a shot deep.

Are you kidding? They were stacking the LOS all game and we were running on them successfully.

Also, the tendency to pass when RW and RB are in the game, hurt us there. Which is what made the call bad. 3rd and 2, if you are going to pass there, you do it in play action fashion. Get the LBs to run up and throw over them.

You don't give them a known passing formation there and pass.

1st-10-Atl42 Rush Ronnie Brown Off Right Guard to Atl34 for 8 yards

2nd-2-Atl34 Rush Ronnie Brown Off Right Tackle to Atl30 for 4 yards

1st-10-Atl30 Pass Gus Frerotte Pass to Chris Chambers to Atl23 for 7 yards

2nd-3-Atl23 Rush Ricky Williams Off Left End to Atl22 for 1 yard

3rd-2-Atl22 Rush Ronnie Brown Off Left Tackle to Atl21 for 1 yard

4th-1-Atl21 Rush Ronnie Brown Off Right Tackle to Atl16 for 5 yards

1st-10-Atl16 Pass Gus Frerotte Pass to Sammy Morris to Atl14 for 2 yards

2nd-8-Atl14 Pass Gus Frerotte Pass to Wes Welker to Atl8 for 6 yards

3rd-2-Atl8 Interception Gus Frerotte pass intended for Chris Chambers intercepted by Keion Carpenter RETURNED from Atl5 for 1 yard.

Passing on 3rd and 2 wasn't crazy....really? They just passed twice....they have two runningbacks that just carried them down the field....they have 2 downs to acquire 2 yards....but instead of running the football....they threw for the third time in a short area...where all the defenders happened to be....maybe not crazy...maybe it was...but it sure was STUPID.

And the other thing that shows is, in critical situations, we rely on Gus too much. Inside the 20 he throws it 3 times and RW and RB get zero touches inside the 20. Doesn't make much sense, unless you have a good QB.

I agree it wasnt all that bad. I think Linehan was looking at it as having two shots..one on 3rd down and another on 4th. If the third down try failed we would have run it on 4th down. I think he was trying to catch them off guard on third down in hopes of scoring. Gus just cant make that throw. The only thing Linehan did wrong was not take into account how bad gus is in the red zone.

well maybe not on that play, but in general.

i remember a few times on short yardage plays both teams being stopped for 0 yards.

people are mad it didnt work. but if it had worked, it would have been the "right" call.

i think the play call was correct, but the execution was bad.

There are four stunning reasons that play made absolutely no sense.

1. The most talked about, that we'd been running well on the Falcons all day.

2. That Gus Frerotte has shown a tendency to throw interceptions in the red zone this season.

3. There was 2:47 left on the clock, we had 2 timeouts, it was 3rd and 2 from the 8. Tell me, say the pass works and we punch it into the endzone. That gives the Falcons two and a half minutes, and a kick return with a dangerous kick returner, to get into field goal position to WIN THE GAME. The coaches should have been thinking about running down the clock more, and you don't do that with play-action passes.

4. We ran the PLAY-ACTION FAKE out of the Ricky-Ronnie formation, and everyone and their sister knows that is a passing formation. Later, Keion Carpenter merely confirmed what Saban and Linehan should have known: that as soon as we went Ricky-Ronnie backfield, they knew it was a pass.

Very poor judgement by Linehan, and if Saban did not overrule it, very poor judgement by Saban. But, that is what happens when you get into the moment and you don't have as much time to think about things.

Saban can't come right out and say it was a poor call. But, if he could, trust me he would.

psst he's a bill's fan 7 yards is deep to them.......:rofl3:
sadly enough, your not wrong. we do not use our deep threat like we should.

but, that doesn't change the fact, that it was not a "bad call" to pass on 3rd and 2.

I agree. Good lay out CK.

I'm not second-guessing the coaching. Because I was screaming before the play "RUNTHEBALL!" There was close to 3 minutes remaining so it was in our interests to pound it out and run some clock (or force them to call TO's) and avoid what everyone knows Freotte is capable of doing (throwing an int. near the goal line). Yes it was an awful decision to throw the ball where it could get picked off - but the coaching staff should know better than to try a pass in that situation. The two previous plays were also throws, (amazingly complete for 8 yards). Once we got to the 16 yard line on Ronnie's 5 yard run on 4th and 1 we went pass happy. INCOMPREHENSIBLE! This isn't a game we necessarily should have won but it's one we could have. We should have scored a TD to tie or maybe even done something bold like go for 2!

In light of those four reasons, there is literally no reason to run that play.

If you are hoping to catch the Falcons playing the run, then you don't operate out of the Ricky/Ronnie backfield, because running is not a credible threat out of that backfield.

How can you place the game in Gus's hands....when you have two runningbacks that should be abe to pick up 2 yds in two plays? Linehan is a fool....period. The reason I suspect he coached as well as he did in Minn..isn't because of his play calling as much as Culpepper and Moss. Players we don't have at this time. Your strength is running the football....so run.
