Patriots, defense take a Giant step forward: Beat New York, focus on Miami
By Michael Felger
Monday, October 13, 2003

FOXBORO - The result left coach Bill Belichick ebullient, but not to the point where he couldn't remember the schedule.

His players hadn't even gotten their pads off following a 17-6 victory over the Giants at Gillette Stadium yesterday when Belichick walked into the locker room and challenged them for what's next: the Dolphins in Miami.

In the 37 years that the Patriots and Dolphins have been playing football, the Pats have never won a game in Miami in September or October. Autumn is when the South Florida sun still fires hot and the Dolphins usually burst out of the gate. Belichick's Pats have lost their last three attempts in Miami by a cumulative score of 66-26.

The Patriots may be on a modest roll, particularly on defense, but the players know next week's game will constitute another level.

`We have to play better,'' safety Rodney Harrison said. ``This victory will be short-lived, because over history every time the Patriots have gone down to Miami, they've pretty much gotten their butts kicked. So we really have to step up and focus and get that turned around.'' ....

It all added up to a beaming Belichick. That was something of a surprise to his players. The Miami challenge was not.

``I think we're doing alright. But we're going to a place where historically we haven't done very well,'' Bruschi said.

``The game we want to get down there is going to be a big game. A battle for first place. So here we go.''
