Pats trade Bethel Johnson

The Patriots today traded disappointing fourth-year receiver Bethel Johnson to the New Orleans Saints for veteran defensive lineman Johnathan Sullivan, the No. 6 overall pick in 2003, according to sources.

Like Johnson, the Pats’ second-round pick in 2003, Sullivan came into the league with big expectations but never panned out for the Saints. Last year he had 34 tackles and one sack in 14 games. He has just 1.5 sacks for his career. The Saints moved up to select Sullivan (6-foot-3, 315 pounds) in 2003, giving up their two first-rounders to move to the sixth spot.

Johnson lived up to his promise as one of the fastest players Bill Belichick has ever coached, but durability and toughness issues dogged him.

He had just four catches in 11 games last season.

Was just about to post this. What are your thoughts on this trade DW?

My thoughts are disappointment for disappointment.

Now, that said, both have a chance to ressurect their careers. Bethel just might turn things around in NO.

Sullivan is in the place to turn thngs around, but I smell a rat with him. He has trouble with conditioning, so he'll have an uphill battle with Belichick right from the start.

But who the hell knows, anything can happen. There is a slight chance he could turn into what he was projected, especially playing with Seymour. We'll see. Overall, it's a semi-bust for a semi-bust.

In the case, then Sullivan to Belichick will be like Manny Wright to Saban. Just make sure that Belichick doesn't make Sullivan cry.

This is the first time I've seen a Pats fan on this site in a really really long time.

i like the trade for the pats....the whole get a gy with talent and change him philosophy...same as saban.....this guy might resurrect his career in new england

Both were pretty pathetic.......I agree that if Sullivan can't get in shape he's surely doomed. I think they are looking to use SUllivan at backup NT. Bethel couldnt run a route if you gave him a map and chalked it out on the field.

Even if it doesn't work out for New England, they're only responsible for his base salaries of 600K and 800K?

But it's just not looking good from a rival stand-point...Yes he was horrible in Nawlins...But Belichick? We've seen what he can do with potential, and Sullivan has plenty of it...If it's reached, that spells trouble...And to be honest...I think Belichick and Pepper Johnson get alot out of Sullivan.

I hope this trade makes the Patriots a little weaker in the division.

No risk at all. The Pats can cut him with no cap hit, unless he's on the roster as of Sept 9th. Then theyd owe him his salary for this year, 689k.

Can't see how that happens, unless they really miss the 4 receptions Bethel mad elast year.

I'm another Pats fan and agree with DW. It's a low risk trade for both teams. Both players have been very disappointing. There's been debate as to whether Johnson would have made the team this year or not. He has blazing speed but hasn't contributed meaningfully as a WR. The trade gives both players a chance to turn things around, but will either earn roster slots?

You can imagine that Belichick has the ability to make Sullivan into a good player and the Pats would come up smelling of roses.
