Seems to me an 11-5 team should not miss the playoffs. But if it happens to the Patriots I won't be shedding any tears.

I hope it happens, but not for the same reason. The only way the current system might get changed is if something drastic like this happens. There could be an 8-8 team in the AFC playoffs while the 11-5 darling Patriots might not be in. You know Roger Goodell and company will not like that and they will try to come up with something to change the format, which I am in favor of.

No we were 10-6 that year. No 11-5 team has ever missed the playoffs?

Mid-1980s. 1985 I think, but I'm not sure.
Denver missed the playoffs in 1985 with an 11-5 record (even though Cleveland made it in with a record of 8-8) . Look at the standings there. But keep in mind that was a time when only 5 teams made the playoffs in each conference.. Now 6 teams make it. And there has never been a team to miss the playoffs with a record of 11-5 or better under the current (6 seed) format
