Im tired of people blaming the offensive shortcomings on Henne, im not a Henne homer but I watched every snap and under pressure and with no separation from his Wrs he did well. The fact is our WR and TE are not good. Bess is a 3, and Hartline may be a 2 someday, and that is it. You never saw brady have to thread passes in coverage like henne did, and you saw brady have all day, which henne did not.
I was one of those people saying Pennington hurts us on O and i will hold to that. The fact was he couldnt stretch the field, but he did a great job with his skillset with the WRs and weapons he had. Henne yesterday did the same, with the additional ability to go deep and keep people honest.
Going forward IT HAS to be the #1 priority to develope the pass rush. with #2 getting playmaking receivers. IDC who is in your secondary is, give brady and those weapons that time, they will hurt u everytime. If we had champ bailey, and deon they woulda been able to pass. And although we Do need better pass protection, separation by our WRs can be a fix for that while the oline develops.
So as the season realistically hangs in the balance, 1 more loss the rest of the way if we want a shot....we can begin to look going forward.
OLB/ILB/DE-crowder is fine, we missed him on Run D, need rush/cover ILB, mcdaniel, and paul can hold down nose in a rotation.
WR/TE- Keep Bess and Hartline, try turner out to see if we have anything. and in FA and draft get playmakers. I like Tate alot..small but not afraid. Haynos dropped that one, but looked decent.
I honestly believe maybe im dumb that if we give Henne 2 real weapons combined with a consistant passrush we are a playoff team...and possibly more.
A ILB, DE, OLB, WR, TE...all need to be upgraded. Seems like alot, but 1 good draft, and FA period combined with the young guys-CBs, Clemons, Henne, Haynos, Hartline the rest of the way and were truly a team to be reckoned with.
FA with Ross and Ireland we should be able to fill 2 of these holes well with maybe a signing to solidify another. Draft depending where we draft should nail down 2 more....allowing for one total miss on day one.
Playcalling is an issue but there is a reason for the calls based on hours of film and what they see happening. You cant blitz when your blitzers outside of the S cant smell the QB, and if brady sees that safety coming hes hitting the open man...bank on it. On offense I didnt like all the pat white stuff, but they see the teams stacking the box, and our qb put the ball where it needed to be many times to no evail.
We are close, and are young. The vets on their way out are not performing, and if our decision makers have shown us anything, they recognize needs and get it fixed...(outside of WR). We get solid production in 2-3 of the positions mentioned were a playoff team yearly...if we get lucky and get 4-5 of them filled were a real contender.
I pride myself on being a realist, and outside of these GAPING HOLEs were solid...fill them just to average NFL production and Im confident we are back to year in and year out playoff appearances.
