Their #1 WR at this point is Reche Caldwell.....I think teams will load the box if Maroney shows he can run effectivly, because anyone who fears Caldwell beating them for big gains....well they suck
You must not have watched Saturdays game. Brady went 15-20. But more importantly he spread the ball to anyone who was open. Maybe Watson was open, maybe Caldwell was open, maybe Kevin Faulk was open for a screen, Bam Childress got open for 3 catches and 70 yards on the first team offense. Graham got a catch or two, Garret Mills and David Thomas also got catches, then later on when Cassel was in he hit Troy Brown for one 20 yard gain then another for a 15 yard gain the next play. Then he found Rich Musinski for a touchdown then Heath Evans for one.
CLEARLY, it doesnt matter if you have Bam Childress starting or Troy Brown starting or Reche Caldwell starting, or Chad Jackson when he gets there. Brady will find them if they get open, they just need to catch the ball. There are four effective tight ends on the Patriots and all four have looked very good so far in the pre season. Same goes for Kevin Faulk, who has made some brilliant catch and runs.
As Michael Smith said on his ESPN article today...
"The Patriots WR's are like the Broncos running backs over the years. With or without Deion Branch."
What he means is the Patriots could bring in Bam Childress to start, they could bring in Reche Caldwell or Chad Jackson and they can produce because they have Brady as their QB, joke all you want about Brady he is the best QB in the league or second best. The running game will be superb but the passing game will still be dynamite. Why? Because last year the Patriots set a record with 14 players catching TD's. Branch, Givens, Brown, Watson, Graham, Fauria, Dwight, Davis, Vrabel, Ashworth, Dillon, B. Johnson, and two others.
Only 6 of those 12 were proper WR's. Brady has many targets who arent Wideouts. He doesnt need 1 or 2 star WR's since he can find anyone open. Brady has the best vision of any QB right now in the NFL. Maybe you disagree but if you watched Brady and his first team offense last night there were all types of players making recieving contributions including Recievers you've never heard of. The Passing game should be feared by teams. I'm sorry but Brady isnt going to Caldwell 70 times for 10 touchdowns. I only see 60 receptions max for a single player and thats Ben Watson who had a mind blowing 15.2 YPC, same as Steve Smith.
