Was watching "A Football Life - Bill Walsh" last Friday night and part of it was devoted to the 1984 season. They mentioned it was his greatest team. They also made claim that that 1984 49er team could have very easily went undefeated. Their one loss came against the Steelers in October. The 49ers were leading late in the game when they knocked away a pass in the endzone (believe it was on 4th down) to preserve their lead. But the refs threw a bogus PI flag and gave the steelers a new set of downs. They scored and won the game. Refs bailing out Steelers near the goal line. We have seen that a few times over the years.

This got me thinking. How would that Super Bowl outcome have changed if the 49ers were undefeated entering the game. The Dolphins always seem to rise to the challenge when protecting the 72 perfect season. I know the 49ers were more talented and probably would have still won. But it is kind of interesting to ponder back and think how that Super Bowl might have been different.

Any one remember the details of that Pittsburgh win over 49ers that kept Perfectville at population 1?

Also are there any other teams that almost made it? Obviously the 2007 Patriots were minutes away from joining. That great bears team had no chance thanks to Marino on that Monday night game. Any others?

Bottom line: They did not do it!

It was in the first half of the season....no telling what the pressure of being undefeated would have done to them had they won it....they had other close games and may have lost one of those....bottomline....they didn't do it.

It was a great team though.....It was Marino's bad fortune to face such a great team in his only Superbowl.

However....the Steeler team that beat the niners that year....Marino routed in the AFC championship game.

Its all about matchups and execution.

Well that certainly makes for a good discussion. Not!

Good point. That pressure probably would have gotten to them like it has to just about everyone. Looks like the 1976 Raiders went 16-1 but were crushed in their only defeat

Bluefin nailed it match ups are key - some teams have other teams number when they win certain one to one battles

Win some lose some. 72 is the only team to actually win all Games. We even did it with our back up. We almost lost games that year too. I won't give any credit to the pats. Maybe they did
Have a great team, but how much of them cheating played into it. I look back on the 1984 game And think, damm only SB game Marino played. 2nd year and has to face that defense.

Did we have Olavidotti as D cordinator? I'm so past ready to see this team back stomping the league. Still haven't watched us go deep in the playoffs. Only on Americas game or old videos.

2007...hmmm...oh you mean the other time the patsies were caught cheating? Yes they were very close to being "perfect". That would have really meant a lot.

All I remember about the 80's 49ers is that they were awesome. If they had made it into Perfectville it would still be a very elite and respectable group. If the cheats ever get in with this coach and owner, burn Perfectville to the ground because it would lose its meaning.

No. The D-Coordinator that year was Chuck Studley.

The 49ers was not even the last team to go undefeated that year, the Miami Dolphins was. The Dolphins started that year 11-0 before finishing the regular 12-4.

The Chicago Bears started the 1985 season 13-0 and finished the regular season 15-1.

The 1998 Denver Broncos started the season 13-0 and finished the regular season 14-2.

The 2005 Indianapolis Colts started the season 13-0 and finished the regular season 14-2.

The 2009 Indianapolis Colts started the season 14-0 and finished the regular season 14-2.

The 2011 Green Bay Packers started the season 13-0 and finished the regular season 15-1.

The 1948 Browns went Undefeated 15-0....but they were in the AFL. I think Otto Graham led the Browns to 7 Championship titles in ten years.....I think 3 in the NFL and 4 in the AFL.. Otto Graham smokes Joe Montana in titles and playing big in Championships but you rarely hear his name brought up. I think the Browns last Championship was in 1964...two years before the Superbowl started. This was the last championship for Cleveland in any sport. My dad used to watch him and Jim Brown. My dad lived in Philly and had Eagle's tickets. He always tells me how he saw the Eagles last Championship in 1960.

By the way, Don Shula nearly had TWO Perfect seasons. Shula was the Head Coach of the Baltimore Colts in 1968....the Colts only loss came in their last game... Superbowl III when the NY Jets beat them.

I was going to mention that one. Miami beat them on a Monday night at home but they had lost to the Giants the week before so we did not stop their streak.

I believe they came into the super bowl with one lose (Cleveland)

If a team could do it in current times, I'd say Aaron Rodgers and the pack could pull it off. That team is very balanced and well coached. I know the Seattle game probably comes to mind, but had they played lights out and not preserve the lead, they'd be in 'Zona right now.

The Phins went 14-2 in '84...only losses were to Chargers and Raiders
