Competition-The Elixir Of Success!
Pennington is not only our starter, the player-coach of our offense, he is an unheralded & unrecognized Franchise QB.
Penny is obviously at the top of his game & one of the best to captain a team in the NFL.
The first argument against Pennington is he has a weak arm, he can't go deep.
No one is going to argue he has a rocket arm. He does not. However, he has a deep pass when his shoulder is healed & he has to time to set his feet & throw. He can get it down field consistently.
How often do you go deep? 10%, probably closer to 5% of the time. If the the deep pass were the ticket, many QB's that went undrafted would be in the NFL today.
The game is about management & ball control. Accuracy in passing is the common denominator in judging QB's, not how far or hard they can throw the ball down field. You have to hit your target & move the chains. Griese's "best" completion percentage was 63% in 1978. Marino's "best" was 64.2% in 1984. Pennington's was 67.4% last season. Think about it.
The second wrap on Penny is his durability. Every QB faces injury, every time he takes the field.
Two things:
1) he's healthy, has the Orca-5 in front of him, the Tandem from Hell to burn up the turf, WildCaPat to buy more time, an improved WR Corp. All these things bode well for the Pennington Renaissance & his longevity in the sport.:hump:
2) Pennington is actually physically bigger than Henne. And he started a conditioning program, with his private trainer, to prepare for the 2009 season immediately after ending his play-off & championship performance.
By virtue of the miraculous 2008 season, Pennington has earned the right to compete for the big enchilada. Penny is our returning starter & will not go quietly into the night. He is a pro-bowl & franchise quality QB. Penny is a proven commodity, Henne is a virtual unknown at this level. Remember what happened to Beck & so many other promising QB's when the rubber hit the road.
Depending on this season, Pennington may very well prove to be our ticket to the SuperBowl in 2010.
The third negative that surfaces with Penny in any discussion of potential future play with Miami is his age. The Cardinals played in the last SuperBowl with a QB nearly 10 years Pennington's senior & Kurt Warner was resigned to play again this year, on what is arguably the best offensive team in the NFL. This is 2009 not 1947. Things change, including the paradigm & prototype of an NFL QB.
