Here's where it gets interesting....
Opponents (defense):
Pennington's opponents (2008-2009): 62.5 completion %, 6.8 YPA, 1.68 TD/INT (419/249), 86 passer rating
Henne's opponents (2008-2009): 59 completion %, 6.2 YPA, .92 TD/INT (188/205), 72.7 passer rating
The difference in competition is night and day. Very rarely does a QB go through such a long stretch of playing mostly creampuff defenses; likewise, it's not very often a QB will go through an 11 game stretch where he faces such tough defenses.
Also, from watching the games, it seems like we've been running the ball better and scoring more points under Henne. IMO, this is because teams can't just stack the box against Henne. I've also noticed that we're much better on 3rd down than what we were with Pennington.
According to ESPN, we converted 37% of our 3rd downs (71/192) and 66.7% of our 4th downs (10/15) last year. This year we've converted 48.4 % of our 3rd downs (104/215) and 70.6% of our 4th downs (12/17). Granted Pennington started 3 games this year. I'd be interested in seeing a more in depth breakdown regarding 3rd downs under Henne and Pennington (3rd & short, 3rd & medium, 3rd & long). I remember at times last year when it was 3 & more than 5 yards having absolutely no hope that we'd convert those downs.
Pennington may be better since last year, but the difference is marginal.
