As awesome as this sounds as a QB Mentor/Coach, I don't really see Dan as the coaching or mentoring type. Dan is an enigma of sorts.
He was a leader on the field. But I have yet to see him as a leader off the field. He seemed to be a tremendous student of the game, but I've never seen any evidence he could be a teacher/mentor. He seems to have great PR value, but he's never been a great promoter. He seems to be offended by puppet or token roles, yet he's not exhibited a tremendous amount of qualities that would dictate respect as a FO guy.
I don't think Ross is truly toying with Dan, I honestly think there is a problem defining a role and purpose for Dan within the organization.
I've often said we do not embrace our living legends correctly. They are not integrated into our organization as resources for every player that walks the halls.
I think the problem is being approached the wrong way. Ross may be asking the wrong question. Instead of trying to make a square Dan fit in a round Front Office. We need to be figuring out what Dan brings to the table that makes him a unique asset to the Miami Dolphins.
QB mentor on and off the field; a guy whom the QBs spend a lot of time with each day on the field, in the film room and as a confidant outside of work. A leadership mentor to help identify and establish the leaders of the team by the players. A mediator between the players and coaches. Conduct his own QB camps for our offensive skill positions. Public face for the organization; PR, talk shows and tv appearances.
I think the mistake is trying to make Dan fit a traditional role. I think the solution is asking Dan how he wants to help the organization and define responsibilities based around it.
We need Dan Marino, Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor walking these halls. It has gotten so obvious we have dropped the ball on this issue that our living legends are considering working for other teams. This is beyond embarrassing. It's insulting.
I've changed my mind about Ross when he pledged his own money to renovate the stadium. I hope I don't have to change my mind again.
