Dan Marino on Monday confirmed interest in working for the Dolphins and said Pittsburgh is the only other team he would work for. A friend of Marino said a job on the Dolphins’ football side appeals to him, and meeting with free agents could be one element.

But the question is how much, if any, road work and scouting Marino would be willing to do. And if he’s expecting final say on personnel, that’s not going to happen. As noted in this space Sunday, owner Stephen Ross said he plans to talk to him.

What would he do for us. Just a figure head. Good for sales iguess

Yikes, it would look bad for all parties if he goes to the Steelers.

Absolutely would be a bundled opportunity and an embarrassment to the organization. A "black eye".

Hey, if Dan wants to go to Pittsburgh...let him go and good riddance. Can't believe the Hall of Famer would ever put it out there that he would work for the ****in Steelers. Who knows, maybe he has some children running around there. Are you ****in kidding me Dan? ****. Go work the the Steelers...might be the best thing you can do for our franchise at this point.

Ross doesn't seem particularly interested in giving Dan any power or say. He wants him... as a hood ornament, basically. This talk about Pittsburgh seems designed to force Ross' hand, imo. I mean, don't get me wrong. Dan grew up in Pittsburgh, still roots for the Steelers (in general), as well as the Pirates and Penguins. So it's not like he wouldn't want to work for Pittsburgh. But at the same time the Steelers are a family affair and always have been. If neither Terry Bradshaw nor Franco Harris nor Joe Greene nor Lynn Swann have found their way into the Steelers front office... why would Dan Marino?

I'd like to see Marino come into the Dolphins organization and be given real power. I'd be in favor of that. I mean, I think most posters here are aware that I think the current regime is about 85% bozo, so what could it hurt? Unlike the situation a decade ago, I think Dan truly wants the responsibility and is willing to do the work (unlike the bitch work Rick Spielman had him doing all those years ago).

To me, this change in Marino's mindset is more than anything down to his close friend John Elway getting into Dan's ear about how close the front office experience is to the field. Don't forget, these guys tread that line between friendship and competitor in a way that's pretty unique. They didn't play against each other that often, but don't forget that. Dan has seen how invigorated Elway is by his experience, how much it turns on his competitive juices and gives him that crazy mainline football experience... and I think Dan is hooked again. He'd probably convinced himself that since his playing days were over that he'd have to move on from his competitive life completely, that nothing he'd ever find in his life could ever compare to the inferno of crunch time.

But here it is. Elway is experiencing it. And Dan wants it. Badly. The problem is... Ross looks at the Dolphins like it's his toy train set and he doesn't want anyone else to play. So I don't see it happening.

I doubt either team would bring Dan in to make player decisions. He's not ready for that right off the street.

If I'm Ross i give him whatever salary he wants and a similar role as Nat Moore VP of something.
Host the events like golf tourneys and banquets. Meet and greet with all free agents. Maybe even be Ross's face of the franchise when there are major announcements. After a learning period maybe he gets a football title.
At least put a solid offer on the table because it would be a major coupe for Pittsburg if he went there and a black eye on the organization at least in the public's eyes.

That is complete drivel, sorry man. Just because Marino was a great quarterback does not mean he is front office material. Lets wait and see in 5 to 10 years just how great Elway is

What the hell? Are you one of those bastard children or something? I'd expect this reaction if he listed any of the Patriots, Bills or Jets... But you're getting your panties in a bunch over him being open to working for his hometown team? Goodness gracious. :rolleyes2:

how bout QB coach?

As awesome as this sounds as a QB Mentor/Coach, I don't really see Dan as the coaching or mentoring type. Dan is an enigma of sorts.

He was a leader on the field. But I have yet to see him as a leader off the field. He seemed to be a tremendous student of the game, but I've never seen any evidence he could be a teacher/mentor. He seems to have great PR value, but he's never been a great promoter. He seems to be offended by puppet or token roles, yet he's not exhibited a tremendous amount of qualities that would dictate respect as a FO guy.

I don't think Ross is truly toying with Dan, I honestly think there is a problem defining a role and purpose for Dan within the organization.

I've often said we do not embrace our living legends correctly. They are not integrated into our organization as resources for every player that walks the halls.

I think the problem is being approached the wrong way. Ross may be asking the wrong question. Instead of trying to make a square Dan fit in a round Front Office. We need to be figuring out what Dan brings to the table that makes him a unique asset to the Miami Dolphins.

QB mentor on and off the field; a guy whom the QBs spend a lot of time with each day on the field, in the film room and as a confidant outside of work. A leadership mentor to help identify and establish the leaders of the team by the players. A mediator between the players and coaches. Conduct his own QB camps for our offensive skill positions. Public face for the organization; PR, talk shows and tv appearances.

I think the mistake is trying to make Dan fit a traditional role. I think the solution is asking Dan how he wants to help the organization and define responsibilities based around it.

We need Dan Marino, Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor walking these halls. It has gotten so obvious we have dropped the ball on this issue that our living legends are considering working for other teams. This is beyond embarrassing. It's insulting.

I've changed my mind about Ross when he pledged his own money to renovate the stadium. I hope I don't have to change my mind again.

Nobody knows for sure what he can and cannot do as either a coach or in the FO. While he doesn't have the FO or coaching experience some guys have, he has a high football IQ and possibly has a good eye on talent at the QB spot and perhaps more. Considering he couldn't do worse than some of the clowns we have had in the FO and coaching staff, so why not give him a legit shot at something where he has some power, while still learning more about the FO business.
