This might come as a surprise to many, but the cumulative grade for the Dolphins' last four drafts is probably a solid 'C.'

If that seems generous for a team that went 29-35 from 2012 through 2015, consider the words of Mark Dominik, the former general manager for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"Every GM would hope, and every fan would hope, you can get seven starters out of seven picks," said Dominik, now an ESPN analyst. "But the reality is if you can get three starters out of a draft class you did a good job. And hopefully the rest are filling other key roles on special teams or as depth players."

Last year's Dolphins had four starters from the 2012 draft class (quarterback Ryan Tannehill, defensive end Olivier Vernon, running back Lamar Miller and wide receiver Rishard Matthews), three from 2014 (wide receiver Jarvis Landry, right tackle Ja'Wuan James, guard Billy Turner) and three from 2013 (linebacker Jelani Jenkins, tight end Dion Sims, guard Dallas Thomas).

The 2015 class didn't produce any regular starters during their rookie season, but five of the seven draftees made a start.

Asked to grade the Dolphins' past four drafts based on what we know now, Dominik gave the 2012 class a 'B+,' the 2013 class a 'D,' and the 2014 and 2015 classes each a 'B.'

One of the big problems is there were few stars taken in the past four drafts.

The 28 draftees only produced one Pro Bowl season (Landry in 2015).

And, yes, there's also the stain of defensive end Dion Jordan, the No. 3 overall pick of the 2013 draft, whom the Dolphins traded up to acquire.

"You gave up picks to get a guy that's been one of the more colossal busts of the last few years," Dominik said.

Perkins get a solid F from me- worst reporter at the SS and that takes some doing

the 2013 draft was an unmitigated disaster.
Let's just recap the draft:

Dion Jordan (suspended)
Jamar Taylor (terrible)
Dallas Thomas (terrible beyond all planes of existence, transcending terribleness)
Will Davis (not on team anymore)
Jelani Jenkins (average)
Dion Sims (overrated)
Mike Gillislee (not on team anymore)
Caleb Sturgis (not on team anymore)
Don Jones (not on team anymore)

I don't think Yeats could of described Thomas more eloquently

I love hindsight.

You must admit, by the criteria given, the grade is correct. 3 starters. will Davis plays somewhere as does Sturgis. Jordan and Jones were on ST. Lost track of the rest. And I don't know the 'starters' on every other team for comparison.
That said, Thomas is starting because he must have pictures of Philbin in a brothel. REAL bad. I'd prefer a grade based on 'could start for half the NFL teams.' Three of those would be a B+

Agreed. It's crazy, there were 5 people on that list that I was really excited about. Lol

Theres that misconception again.

Drafting a starter isn't necessarily indicative of said starters talent, its indicative of how bad our roster is.

What happens when our starter goes up against another teams star? You don't have to answer, i already know the answer: 29-35.

Well a C is an average grade, and we have been stuck at average for years!

I remember Perk being the only local reporter last pre season predicting a average to below average season. He did this at the zenith of the Dolphins hype machine when everyone was going crazy about our stifling defensive line.

The Dolphins' problem since JJ is that they seem incapable of drafting GAMECHANGING players... Where are the homegrown stars in the past decade plus? They do OK drafting a bunch of solid type players, but they very rarely draft any players that just pop off the screen every Sunday. Which is why they have been continuously dropping huge dollars on "star" players in FA and watching them underperform.

Since JJ's drafts that produced JT, Zach, Madison and Surtain, which drafts have produced veritable stars? The closest we have gotten is Chambers, Reshad Jones and WE HOPE Landry... And even these are seriously stretching the definition of stars. Where are our JJ Watts? Adrian Petersons? Etc. We are hoping DeVante turns into one, but that is far from a sure thing.

This team needs to hit on a star player at least once every couple of years in order to ever change our fates...

"Every GM would hope, and every fan would hope, you can get seven starters out of seven picks,"

I HATE this line of thinking....a starter on a team that hasn't been a serious contender in years/decades is of a different caliber than a starter on a championship contender. For example, the vast majority of the starters on Cleveland are absolute garbage as compared to the starters on a good team like NE - its the cliche apples to oranges comparison. To use a blanket term of "starter" to describe a successful pick shows a complete lack of understanding of personnel evaluation at the very least, and I PRAY that nobody on our staff agrees with this simplistic, moronic view of a "successful draft strategy".
