I can't share full articles with you guys but there are a few to note.

--No progress has been made in the contract impasse with LG Pete Kendall, who is seeking to renegotiate his 2007 contract from $1.7 million to $2.7 million--but the Jets are holding firm. Their position is that they don't renegotiate deals with three years left, but insiders say they did give Laveranues Coles a $1 million raise last November.

Kendall wants to be traded or released and the Jets seem willing to accommodate him, although they probably will take their time doing so. Kendall shared first-team reps at left guard with third-year player Adrien Clarke during mini-camp.

Personnel:

With both sides apparently dug in quite deeply in the Pete Kendall contract impasse, it seems obvious the Jets will be moving in a different direction at left guard. Third-year player Adrien Clarke has been sharing reps with Kendall, and the Jets seem to believe he has the potential to be a starter, although if he doesn't pan out they certainly could look to make a trade during the summer.

In the end, it is the last note that is of the most interest. Everything else that you've seen and heard about the Pete Kendall situation could just be meaningless talk.

Kendall sounds unhappy, because he is. One local journalist has taken to calling him "Pistol Pete" because he walks into Jets facility and starts firing away at Jets management.

Here is part of a Q&A from Jets journalist Dan Leberfield:

Q. How big of a problem has the Pete Kendall situation been, and how do you think it will play out?

Leberfeld: It could play out in the Dolphins' favor. The Jets attempted to trade Kendall during the draft, and there were rumors the Dolphins were interested. The Kendall holdout is ugly. He has blasted the team on a number of occasions. If he can shoot his way out of the building (one writer nicknamed him "Pistol Pete"), the Dolphins would be very interested in signing him. Dolphins GM Randy Mueller drafted him while with Seattle.

Kendall wants a $1 million raise, and the Jets aren't budging. It's hard to see him on the team this year. If he is cut or traded, the Jets would likely start former Eagle Adrien Clark at left guard. He started four games for the Eagles in 2005, but was out of football last year with a back injury. Whether he is a capable replacement remains to be seen.

And here is some Q&A from "Pistol Pete" himself...

Q)If things stay the same, are you going to report to training camp?

Kendall: I’m not prepared to say that right now. My first hope, and I’ve maintained this all along, is that I wanted to deal fairly with the Jets. I’m surprised that we couldn’t work it out but apparently the leak that came out and things have been said.

You never say never. I wouldn’t say the bridge is totally burned, but it doesn’t seem like there’s any room to give. When I’m told that my request is reasonable and there’s agreement I’m underpaid, I don’t understand (them not doing anything).

Q)Do you think your demands have been blown out of proportion?

Kendall; There are not extravagantly. I’ve seen it written that all this came out because of the deals that other guys got. I understand the business and I’ll be 34 years old. I’m not asking $18 million over three years, I’m asking for a deal this year. If I stink this year, I get paid less next year, and if I play the same, I get stay the same. I’m a 12-year guy who, I believe, has done a lot for the organization and I don’t think my request is unreasonable. To not even be able to get a phone call back is stunning.

...

Q)Are Mangini and Tannenbaum on the same page regarding this issue?

Kendall: I have no idea if they are on the same page or not so I wouldn’t even care to speculate if there is a problem between the two of them. That was 1.9 that was owed to me in 2004. So if you back the 1.9 out, it’s 3.3. My deal had averaged three million a year so I’d asked for $2.7 this year which would give me six million over two years, which is a three million dollar average. That’s the player I was when I came into here. The market has gone up 25 to 30 percent. I’m not asking to climb like that. Again they are not disputing my number as unfair or unreasonable and I don’t think I have to justify it any more than that.

Q)Are you their kind of player?

Kendall: From everything they told me, I’m their kind of player. Again the things that Eric shared with me in that conversation you don’t share with a player that you plan on running out or don’t like.

There are a couple of things I feel it necessary to point out. The first has to do with Kendall's contract demands. As you can see from the Q&A with Pete himself, he's not asking for a ridiculous sum of money and he acknowledges that. IN FACT, the Jets have acknowledged that his request is in no way ridiculous. They asked him to take a pay cut after a bad game, he did that, and now after a full good year he would just like that money back. Plain and simple. He's not asking for, as he says, $18 million over 3 years.

So let's get out of the way that Pete Kendall is a "greedy" player or someone that wants anything more than what should be coming to him.

The other thing I'd like to point out is what I underlined. I underlined this because this is something Pete has referred to on multiple occasions. Somewhere along the way, Eric Mangini had a conversation with Pete Kendall in which he basically acknowledged Pete's role as an important leader and member of the team, by talking some serious hard core business with the guy about the Jets' plans for certain players, the direction they're headed, etc.

Why is this important? Because since the Jets have suddenly decided to take this hard line stance on not negotiating contracts with 3 years remaining (which is ridiculous since, if you read above, they gave Laveraneous Coles $1 million pay raise with 3 years left on his deal)...Kendall has been making thinly-veiled threats to sort of out some of the things that Mangini told him. The evidence points to this potential outing as being disastrous to the coaching staff and front office.

And that, may be why you are seeing as we speak, this Adrien Clarke fellow sharing equal snaps with Pete Kendall at left guard. That is the third thing I wanted to point out, because it is the most significant piece of new news. Everything up to that could just be posturing and blowing off steam...but the snaps tell the story. Adrien Clarke sharing half the load at left guard to me makes it clear that they're getting ready to part ways with Kendall.

The question I have, at this point, is why the Jets are taking such a hard line stance on not negotiating him a pay raise? They've admitted his demands are not at all unreasonable, they've acknowledged his place among the leadership of the team and his importance to the team...and they've given Coles a pay raise with 3 years remaining on contract. Why the hard line stance? Is this a situation where Eric Mangini believes Kendall to be valuable enough to the team to warrant the raise, but Mike Tannenbaum does not? Is this a situation where Tannenbaum feels their future negotiating position could be compromised if they once again give a player with 3 years remaining a pay raise? Has there been some kind of new review of Kendall's ability to play that led them to believe he's not worth it? Or, has this all just become a touch personal since Kendall is so vocal about his displeasure?

No matter what it is, Kendall was a stalwart on that line last year, and he was instrumental in helping both D'Brickashaw Ferguson and ESPECIALLY Nick Mangold to come along as rookies. He is Trent Green to Samson Satele's John Beck.

The chances are looking almost certain, at this point, based on the sharing of snaps with Adrien Clarke and the optimism coming from the club about him, that Kendall will be released.

And, once that happens, I think it's near certain he becomes a Miami Dolphin, and becomes their new starting left guard. Right now the team is floundering a bit at that spot...working in rookie Drew Mormino and veteran Chris Liwienski. Liwienski wasn't good enough to keep the rookie on the bench prior to the latest mini camp, and Mormino wasn't good enough to keep his starting spot through more than the first day of the mini camp.

It has been made clear that Samson Satele's lack of experience run blocking at Hawaii will see him playing Center instead of Guard. It has also been made clear that Rex Hadnot will play Right Guard, and Vernon Carey will play Left Tackle. Pulling Pete Kendall into camp will give the Dolphins, IMO, a solid four-front, with the biggest question coming at Right Tackle where L.J. Shelton will attempt to play better than he did the last time he played Right Tackle for the Cardinals. If only Joe Toledo would get healthy...or perhaps someone out of left field, like Julius Wilson or Tala Esera? Anthony Alabi? Who knows.

For me, the latest news about Clarke sharing snaps makes me increase my odds that Pete Kendall starts at Left Guard for the Dolphins in Week One from about 25% to probably about 50-60%.

Sounds pretty logical to me.... We should have the cap room once daunte is cut/dealt to sign kendall and get our rookies signed. But if the cap crunch is worse than i think we may see the team jettison marty booker to save his 3 million or so....

I'm really wondering what the JETS told Kendall thats got everyone so spooked....

I think they'd find other ways to save than cutting Booker. That whole thing was overplayed. They tested out his market value in trade, but they also tested out Chambers' market value in trade...along with probably a dozen other players we didn't hear about. Randy Mueller made it a point to talk about how he actively places his teams in a ton of trade talks so that he can make final decisions about whether to execute or not. He's an active pricer, he's not one of those guys that buys shares of IBM and then never checks the stock price over the next 5 years.

Why are the Jests going to release him? They know the Dolphins and other teams are interested, so they can wait out for a trade like we are doing with C-Pep. IMHO, if Kendall is released, it will be done in the last cut before the season.
:err:

Interesting. Hopefully he explained that to some of the players so they don't feel "left out" if they hear some rumors... I always liked bookers play.

I think they're afraid of what Kendall could do to the locker room and through the press. I believe he's also the team's NFLPA representative. I wonder if that plays into it...

I wonder if Kendall asked for the raise because he is forced to be coached by Tony Wise....

When I hear Kendall speak, I don't hear desperation. I sense leverage. And you would think the Jets would play ball a bit harder, too...threaten to hold Pete until final cuts, etc...but so far, the word I'm hearing from literally EVERYONE close to the scene, is that Pete will likely be cut or traded before training camp opens.

As CK pointed out, having Kendall in between Carey and Satele, gives them each a solid veteran there to help out, much like he did w/Ferguson and Mangold as CK said as well. He also played some C when Kevin Mawae got injured a few years back. I remember Cam saying in a PC that Rex Hadnot would be helping to make some of the line calls from his RG spot since he's got experience at C. I can only imagine how much more helpful it'll be for Satele if he too can help make the line calls. It'll only make Satele that much more prepared for each game, and not to mention, it gives Drew Mormino an extra year to prepare, as I'm assuming he'll be our LG at some point in time in the next few years.

I agree mostly, although I think it's a bad assumption to assume a 6th rounder will eventually be a starter at any position except punter, kicker, fullback or return man...

Kendall has tons of experience playing Center. He was originally a Center for the Seahawks, if I remember right. Having Hadnot and Kendall, two vocal guys with lots of Center experience, next to rookie Satele could definitely help cover up any potential rookie mistakes Satele could make in the line calling...allowing him to just go out there and play which is what he should be good at. Long term, you would worry a little that Kendall and Hadnot could stunt his development in terms of making his own calls, but I really don't think that would be an issue. Kendall did wonders with Nick Mangold.
