Peter King MMQB including comments on Chad Johnsonn

Every year there is a receiver in the league that has a breakout season. There is nothing to say that one of the young receiver can't be that guy. If they coach them up, and give them the right tools to succeed, anything is possible. Every great receiver were once unproven commodities.

Other than Welker, who is only a slot receiver, how much talent did the Pats have at the WR position? Below average.
However, they incorporate the TE's and RB's into the passing game (as every successful offense does).
We don't need ONE guy to match Brandon Marshall's production. It will be done by committee. The WR corps needs to work like a unit with each guy serving a specific purpose on a given play. Guys like Wallace, Gates and Pruitt have very good athleticism and will burn you if under estimated or not accounted for. Clay is a tough guy to match up again, Fasano is under rated as a receiver. The RB's (Bush, Miller, Slaton) are dangerous in the passing game as well.
What will determine the success of the offense is Philbin/Sherman's creativity and game management AND the caliber of QB play.

im sorry, wes welker, is a sneakly little bastard, not a great receiver. he simply runs many different routes and changes up in second half. This is what our receivers are going to be doing. looking for the hole. the ball will be coming out quickly, and you better catch the ball and get more yac.

thats all welker is. finding a hole, getting open, and catching the ball and heading up field. He really doesnt do anything special. The idea in new england has always to have four or five guys who simply get open and catch the damn ball and get a first down.

Thats kinda where we are heading. Welker is a puny little smart ass who knows what the coaches/Qb wants and looks for and just goes out and catches simple passes and gets some YAC. He is more smart and reactive to what a defense gives him than running a route designed within some playbook play.

Its reactive and changes at LOS.

jlfin, i never got to your post and you were seeing similar things as i.

Young receivers break out all the time...We just need one of ours to do it...along with the rookie qb, rb, and sean smith

Im sorry but, how does all the things you just described him as doing not make him a great receiver?

Have to agree with you. people seem to discount players that perform that dont have ideal size , speed etc but Welker has done some things that no receiver has ever done and he is not the only receiver that has played with Tom Brady. People tend to give him little credit for what he does on field. 4 seasons of 110 more catches , I mean who else has ever done that. He is 4 catches away from being the all time leading Patriot receiver. If he breaks 100 receptions this year he will be the only player to ever do it 5 times. Welker is a special player

That's not the point. The point is, what type of receiver is he? He's a slot guy, not a guy like Mike Wallace that blows by your defense. The Pats did not have a deep group of WR's last yr and no one that scared a defense. The point of my post was to illustrate what a good coaching staff and good QB can accomplish when they incorporate everyone in the offense (WR, TE, RB's).

WOW

We are compsring the Pat's WR to ours........... AS much as I HATE tom brady.....they have that guy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you remember we had Welker too and he wasnt half as good as he is now!!!!!!!!

Bottom line - Our WR's as a group .......WORSE in NFL. Maybe the Jets are worse.
stop thinking we have a Vic Cruz on the roster. If we had a Vic Cruz we would already know. Vic played in 1 preaseason game had something crazy like 100yards and 3 TD and spent the rest of his time pushing the starters on the Giants roster for playing time. WE HAD / HAVE NO ONE PUSHING OUR STARTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't really believe in the concept of saying that you are in a "rebuilding" mode. No matter who you have on the roster, you are still trying to reach the Super Bowl. You either have what it takes this year, or you don't.

I totally agree with you, with one major exception....we had a different qb throwing to the SAME Welker.

It's pretty apparent this team will spread the ball around more. Just because we don't have a top name WR (that Marshall thing didn't help us much) doesn't mean dick in my opinion.

jlfin good post I agree it would be great to have a standout #1 but NE has done it for years with mid level guys and Welker.

Worst on the league? Why? Cause we don't have a big name guy I say let it play out.

i say so to but not with tanny at QB .NOT UNLESS YOU WANT TO RUIN HIM ,with nobody to get open and him getting sacked every drop bk ,that will make a qb gunshy as hell.

yes with a special QB throwing him the ball. if welker was here and moore was throwing him the ball he wouldnt have half the catches that he did with brady.
