I think that had more to do with injuries. The amoeba, as well as high volume blitzing in general, depends upon having two lock down, man cover corners to be effective. Without Byron Jones, and with X not up to the task (for whatever reason) that approach was not a viable option.

Unfortunately, Boyer had no experience in any other approach. That neutered a lot of game planning and adjustment choices.
