pff was at camp yesterday...

i don't know i thought there was some decent info there...matt moore off target etc not looking like he's in the qb comp with garrard...charles clay dropping easy catches...if the underneath coverage looks that good sounds to me like richard marshall looks good in the nickle but it also makes me wonder if the back end is giving up chunk yards ie the safeties...chad johnson looking meh pretty much

Not worried about a few drops during one practice from Charles Clay. That's not an interesting observation to me. Hornsby essentially trying to call the QB competition off one day is ludicrous. Not an interesting evaluation to me. Hornsby essentially trying to "confirm" that the Dolphins have no plans for Tannehill other than the bench this year is also ludicrous. Not an interesting attempt at a revelation to me. The report that Cam Wake's playing true defensive end means he'll be covered up at times, not interesting to me as everyone should have been able to guess that by now.

The only thing in there that you wouldn't have already known just off twitter reports of various plays (including the 79 yard grab by Roberto Wallace)...is the part about Miami's underneath coverage being the best he's seen outside the 49ers. That's real interesting. I just wish Hornsby would have rolled out with more insightful stuff like that.

The underneath coverage stuff is good news. Hopefully that's the way it's been for most of camp and will continue to be that way in the future because the underneath stuff is Brady's bread and butter.

I don't think it's a stretch to say Garrard should be named starter very soon. we have heard the same thing through camp as well as OTA's; he has simply out-played Moore from the beginning.
Philbin said last month that he wants to name the starter after the first two preseason games and unless Moore goes under a complete transformation in the next couple weeks(doubtful), he's basically taking much needed reps from the starter.

You taking bets on that?

Starter won't be named any time within the next 10 days at least, and my money is on 17 days.

1) Competition Closed

If I was the Dolphins I’d call the quarterback competition now. On the basis of this practice (and the local reporters tell me he was ahead anyway) it’s not even close between my winner, David Garrard and Matt Moore. At the moment both players are alternating repetitions or series with the starters, and with this being Garrard’s first year in Miami, that’s not helpful given the disparity in performance.

While Moore threw behind his targets on slants, forced throws into coverage deep and was intercepted on multiple occasions, Garrard looked commanding and grew in stature as the practice went on; finishing with a picture perfect deep throw down the right sideline to Roberto Wallace for a touchdown despite good coverage. Overall he was precise, moved about confidently in and out of the pocket and threw with both velocity and touch. He did make a few forced throws which were knocked down by the Dolphins defense (that did as good a job of underneath coverage as I’ve seen outside of the 49ers) but these were the exceptions and none looked in imminent danger of being intercepted.

As for first-rounder Ryan Tannehill, he was playing with and against the seconds for the majority of the time and it’s obvious that Miami has no plans, beyond education, for him this year. He looked solid (and in my opinion better than Moore) but I was informed this was often the case until he gets put in against the firsts, and then things usually went downhill quickly.

Interesting.

The pedant in me has a slight issue with a professional website calling it a receiving "core".

I know it's not happening for a couple weeks, Moore will get a chance to turn it around. I just don't think he will.
The good thing is that everyone is getting more reps than usual

Resent statements by guys who actually played QB like Rich Gannon and John Congemi have given me hope Tannehill is farther along in his development than we all believed. I think we have a TRUE competition and ANY of the three may be opening day starter. Coach stated that Matt and David would each get around 20 reps come the first exibition game. Ryan will get his chance also and probably will get at least one start to show what he's got. If he comes out blazing and limits his mistakes or if the other two falter it may be Tannehill's for the taking.

Should be fun to watch. May the best man win.

I have no idea who will be the starter or should be but I can't imagine why a coach (much less an outsider from the media) should declare the QB battle over when we haven't had pads on for a week.

Last night I did a guest spot on Fantasy Football Weekly podcast with Joe Everett. I handicapped it at about 2/3rds David Garrard and 1/3rd Ryan Tannehill.

Full segment starts at about 5 minutes.
