With the Steelers, Falcons, Dolphins, Raiders, and Cardinals looking for new head coaches, here's our initial attempt at guess who'll get which gig.

Steelers: Offensive line coach Russ Grimm is the in-house favorite, and his Pittsburgh roots make him an ever stronger candidate. Offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt could be undermined by the fact that two of his predecessors under Bill Cowher -- Mike Mularkey and Chan Gailey -- flamed out as NFL head coaches.

Falcons: What's the best way to use Mike Vick? Maybe the answer is giving him a dominant defense. That's why either Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin is our prediction. The fact that Tomlin is from the same neck of the woods as running back Mike Vick is a big plus. Bill Cowher is also a possibility, since he was able to win with Kordell Stewart. (Kudos to Sean Jensen of the St. Paul Pioneer Press for pointing out these factors earlier in the week.)

Dolphins: Coach Chin. We can feel it coming. (And a big plus for Cowher's move to Miami would be that the climate isn't conducive to the ugly-*** sweater he wore on Friday to announce his resignation.)

Raiders: Denny Green wants the job that no one else does.

Cardinals: How about Jim Mora Jr? He can be paid less money, since Falcons owner Arthur Blank is on the hook for the difference between what Mora will earn in football and what he was scheduled to make in Atlanta. For the next three years. That's a big plus for the penny-squeezing Bidwills, who also are less likely to realize the serious judgment flaw that Mora's much-publicized radio comments revealed. And Mora's desire to get back on the horse will make him more likely to accept whatever terms the Bidwills impose, including having seven of Denny Green's assistant coaches foisted on him.

Would love for Cowher to be the coach down here . . . however not at the price anywhere near what Tampa gave up to get Gruden . . . heckz no. Rather see one of these up and comming coordinators . . . or even Capers take the job.

Who cares what he gets paid......it doesnt hit our salary cap.

QFT - and besides, how much is a Superbowl worth? If it takes 6 mil a year to get a coach who is committed to winning the big game, I say every second of that contract would pay for itself in the end.

I'd be awfully tempted to give Pissburgh draft picks for his rights.

It would be nice to see someone with his passion on our sideline. He's a proven winner.

He's not talking about the money, the "price" he's referring to is a likely first round pick we'd have to give the Steelers, since the Chin is still under contract for another year.

I have a question: do teams only have to give up draft picks for HEAD coaches who have time remaining on their contract? Why not for Coordinators? Jets and Bucs had to give up 1st rounders for Parcells and Gruden, but we got NOTHING when Rams stole Linehan, why not?

What Tampa gave up for Gruden was insane. Cowher wont cost that much in terms of compensation in my opinion....

PHINZ RULE!!!!

He didn't mean salary, he meant draft picks. Tampa had to give up 2 firsts and 2 seconds for Gruden.

Exactly, I don't even want us to give up 1 first rounder . . . let alone 2 firsts and 2 seconds.

That Tampa team was Super Bowl ready, however those lost draft picks have obviously had an impact on the lack of success they have had. This team is NOT Super Bowl ready, and the loss of draft picks would be another backwards step in creating a contender.

I could care less what Cowher makes, his credentials are ideal . . . but I'm not a fan of giving up 1st round picks for a coach . . nahhh.

While I agree what Tampa gave up for Gruden was insane, he won a SB the next year, so the price was worth it IMO.

Because Linehan was a promotion, not a sideways move. Having to give up draft picks for coordinators would probably hinder their ability some to get head coaching jobs.

I really believe they could have won the SB the next year even if Gruden had not taken over.

He has shown very little since then, IMO.

I doubt that we would have the same level of disappointment from Cower over the long term.

I don't mind giving up a first, just not this year's. New England had to give up a first for Belichick, and that's worked out fine. Miami even had to give up a first for Don Shula, and they still went on to win 2 Super Bowls a few years later.

You can sustain losing a high draft pick. But I do agree with you that the kind of price Tampa paid for Gruden is far too prohibitive and did have a hand in eventually bringing that franchise down.

how about trading down with NE, getting their 2 #1's, then trading one 1st and Jason Taylor? He can play out the rest of his career in his home town. Or better yet work out a deal with Cowher for 2008, let Capers/Murlarkey run the team for a year and not give up anything. Totally off the wall idea; lock Cowher up by making his wife a 'consultant' and paying her the 4 mil that Cowher will miss out on in his year off.
