Finnegan called the team’s defensive approach in 2013 “atrocious,” adding that former defensive coordinator Tim Walton was “in over [his] head” and that the defense struggled from “game plan to technique to fundamentals.”

A source with knowledge of the team’s thinking, speaking on the condition of anonymity, tells PFT that the problem with Finnegan had far less to do with the coaching or the schemes and far more to do with Finnegan.

Some believe the Rams actually played better without Finnegan, who eventually landed on injured reserve in November with a fracture of the orbital bone. We’re told that Finnegan initially tried to play with the injury and that, as he struggled, the injury became a crutch.

So he decided to have surgery, and the team placed him on IR. And, per the source, Finnegan never actually had surgery.

While Finnegan currently is saying all the right things in Miami, those who know him predict it’s simply a matter of time before he has issues with the coaching staff there — especially if he struggles and needs someone other than himself to blame for it.

Seems childish they even responded IMHO.

Both sides are being incredibly childish here, the professional thing to do would have been to never open your mouth about your former employer and the same for the Rams about their former employee. This game is full of ****ing children on both sides of the equation

Some times certain players just don't fit certain teams. When the fit goes wrong both sides are quick to point the fingers of blame towards someone, or something else. More often than not there is plenty of blame from both sides, but when a player goes to a team where he is needed and the system fits him, often times they just mesh much like Grimes last year.

We have no way of knowing if we are getting the pro bowl caliber player from TN or the bad player from the last two years, hopefully it's the TN player, but at this point we really can't know. So far so good, is all I can say.

Sounds like sour grapes from the Rams.

I'm sure their fans see it as sour grapes from Courtland... :idk:

Didnt the Rams have a pretty solid defense the last couple of years?

As noted they fired the DC, have an OC with 2 winning seasons over the last 8 (well 3 if you count late season games facing scrubs) and a HC/defacto GM with 6 winning seasons going on 19, 2 winning seasons out of the last 9 and zero winning seasons over the last 4 who was kicked to the curb in his previous job. Not saying they've wrong about him but also certainly not discounting a possible cluelessness factor either. . :idk:

"A source with knowledge of the team’s thinking" ...

Sounds like it came from someone outside of the Rams organization, or otherwise the reporter would have most certainly titled their source more specifically as coming from "someone within the Rams organization."

If I had to apply my own speculation, I would go out on a limb that it's a close friend of Walton's. Beyond that I don't think anyone else would have a reason to participate in these sort of antics.

It's basically an article about gossip.

You summed it up pretty well there K. But what worries me is that "character guys" don't usually talk to the media about that bad fit after they leave. If they do they would probably just say they have moved on and maybe it was just best for both parties. I really want Philbin to succeed here, but I'm confused...I thought there was a good teamwork atmosphere with Hickey and Philbin and that we were after "character guys". Whether Finnegan is spouting off about the Dolphins or his former team, I think that this is an example of a lack of character.

Its a miracle Florio hasn't been punched in the face with his passive aggressive little quips in his articles.
