What follows is a look at 10 of pro football’s foremost first-round failures in the past 10 years, with particular attention paid to how high in the draft each of them was selected. Whether or not you agree with my admittedly subjective selections, it’s a rundown of disappointing down-and-outers of the highest order, which should give you something to ponder with pro football’s dog days of summer fast approaching:
Biggest bust selected ninth overall

Candidates
2007: WR Ted Ginn Jr. / Dolphins
2006: LB Ernie Sims / Lions
2005: CB Carlos Rogers / Redskins
2004: WR Reggie Williams / Jaguars
2003: DT Kevin Williams / Vikings
2002: DT John Henderson / Jaguars
2001: WR Koren Robinson / Seahawks
2000: LB Brian Urlacher / Bears
1999: LB Chris Claiborne / Lions
1998: RB Fred Taylor / Jaguars

And the loser is … Ted Ginn Jr.

The verdict is definitely still out on Ginn, but draft experts far and wide continue to question the wisdom of his selection in last year’s draft over Notre Dame QB Brady Quinn, who eventually dropped into the Browns’ lap at the No. 22 spot. Truth be told, Ginn is victimized in this context by what must be considered a pretty solid cast of candidates. Robinson, who no doubt has had his share of baggage, was given consideration, but he had his moments during his time in Seattle, especially his second season, when he gained 1,240 yards receiving and averaged just under 16 yards a catch. Reggie Williams also was considered based on his mediocre track record in his first three years with the Jags, but it appears the light might have finally gone on for him last season.
I totally disagree with this. The only reason he is being mentioned as a bust, is because he isn't Brady Quinn. This writer is under the impression that Miami made a mistake in not taking Quinn, not that they took Ginn. Ginn had a solid rookie season as a WR and returner and enters this year as the likely #1 WR on this team. Brady Quinn? Riding the bench in Cleveland as a backup.

Whatever......thats ridiculous. He was a rook last year. Tell me in 3 years he wont be light years better than Reggie Williams. Is Chris Claiborne still in the league.

I somewhat agree with you in that I think it is premature to call Ginn a bust, nor was I so high on Quinn.

That being said, if Quinn develops into a first rate QB and Ginn turns out to be average at best, then the article will have proven correct.

Looking at that list of players, it's pretty fair to conclude that Ginn actually has done the least of that group... but, that doesn't make him a bust by any means. Especially since hes only been in the league for one year.

And you're right... the author didn't have any other reasoning for naming Ginn a bust besides us selecting him over Quinn. No rhetoric about his actual play last season, which I felt was pretty solid all around.

He and Mel Kipper Jr. should hang out and talk. It would spare the rest of the world listening to them.

I still don't think you draft a WR #9 overall unless he's the next Chad Johnson.

With the O-line and QB situation last year NOBODY on offense looked good. I think we'll really see Ginn break out this year.

In all fairness you can't say he will be better then Reggie. He did nothing to support that.

Right now all Ginn has proven is that he is a debatable bust. Anything more or less is pure speculation and opinion. The only reason he has proven to be a debatable bust is simply due to where he was drafted, productivity and team needs.

But, Ginn has yet to do anything to show he can and will be a #1 WR/ He did, however, show that he could be a very solid if not dangerous return man.

youre right.. He hasnt done near as much as the others mentioned....hes a rookie!

Thanks for the info., but that is the most ridiculous thing I've read in a long time. I don't even know where to start. It was his rookie year for Gods sake and I thought he did really well considering on top of being a rookie, he had to play on a 1-15 team with those horrible coaches and without 2 ST penalties, he would've had 2 more touchdowns. This is way too premature! How many TD's did Quinn have last year????

I really think Ginn is going to turn out to be something special for us.

Man these guys writing this junk must be really bored. There are so many sports media outlets now that they all have to scramble around digging and fabricating any BS news that they can to get a leg up in the ratings competition.......simply..WOW!

Exactly, and not when we could have used a QB who was on the board and a LB'er who was on the board before we needed or could have used a WR.

So, realistically, the writer does have a legit case and reasoning with that alone to call him a bust. Because a year later we still don't know if GINN will be a legit #1, and we still are unsure at our QB position and we are still wondering who will replace Zack Thomas.

2 of those worries could have been lifted. Only 1 scenario we took left us still wondering at all 3

It goes to prove one thing- and does it perfectly!

With anyone being alowed on the internet it means any nutjob can have an opinion on anything. It actually doesnt bother me and if you really think about it, its quite funny

PFW is such an awful source of info that I pretty much dismiss anything that sites them as a primary source.
