PFW Head Coach Hot Seat Meter

Chan has never won a playoff game in his career, he has won 10 games in 2 years as Buf's HC, they signed the biggest FA outside of Manning this offseason and re-signed a bunch of their own- how can he not be on the hottest seat in the division?

Rex has been HC for 3 years, been to 2 title games and had his worst season at 8-8. The Jets didn't make any big $ move-how is he on the hot seat?

I think Rex is on the hot seat for the fact that he talks so big and so far hasn't been able to back it up. In New York where the Jets have become second page news to the Giants, the pressure is on for Rex to put together a winning product this year. He doesn't have the luxury of a Jeff Fisher, Pat Shurmur or a Chan Gailey where they coach in a city where a losing season is the expected normal. If Rex goes 8-8 again or goes 7-9, he probably would still survive to coach in 2013, but he will be put on notice next year that he needs playoffs or he is gone. Now if they completely collapse this season, which some expect, and go 3-13 or 4-12 I think he will be gone.

I think Gailey is on the hot seat also, but not because the front office wants to move on. He is on the hot seat because they spent the most money of any team in free agency and there is a lot of media pressure saying this team will make the playoffs. A 7-9 or 8-8 might save him, but another 4-12 or 6-10 season and I think he is gone. He is 10-22 in his first two seasons and had a major collapse last season. Time for Gailey to step it up.

Just because there is a number assigned by the author doesn't indicate how hot any seat is. I don't see any coach in the AFCE getting fired this year because none will have a one or two win season. I do think Rex's seat is the warmest of the 4 (easy Junc, he is not getting fired) but next year could be the point the Jets do fire him if things go south.

I also agree with CK that Philbin is not necessarily in jeopardy if Ireland is fired. Since Philbin joined the team it's easy to see the difference in how the off season has played out with his influence. Ross likes Philbin and I am willing to bet if he fired Ireland he would base his next GM on someone Philbin knows and works well with.

Gotta agree with CK on the Hue Jackson thing. Word from out west was that Hue let being Al Davis's chosen one (when he was named OC the year before, the consensus was he was gonna be HC sooner rather than later) go to his head and he got a little to big for his britches. The Carson Palmer trade also lost him a lot of support.

Remember, a lot of people weren't sure Cam was gonna get fired here despite going 1-15 (IMO he was always gonna get fired), but what set his fate in stone was Parcells found Cam snooping around trying to figure out how the Tuna viewed him.

I also remember hearing that Cam was a poor interview, but Mueller had convinced Wayne and the other higher ups that Cam just wasn't a good interview kind of like some players aren't good in practice. CK mentions all the time how Mike Tomlin blew away everybody during the interview process here, but they were convinced they needed an offensive coach (which in hindsight sucks for us, cause Mr. Tampa 2 Mike Tomlin, embraced Dick LeBeau's 3-4 Zone blitz and spent his first few years learning it from LeBeau to where he considers it his base defense). Now I'm not gonna claim I hated Cam from the start, but there were warning signs that even at 17 I thought were very obvious. I liked Tony more from listening to things but his weaknesses showed as time goes on. That's why I fully supported a full blown coaching search. The 3 hires before Philbin (Saban, Cam, and Sparano), even as a younger fan, I could tell those were the guys our FO wanted to sign and I looked at other interviews as token ones. Philbin was kind of an outsider during our last search, though IMO I do feel had the tragedy with his son not happened he would have been named head coach a helluva lot sooner (reports say he left everybody at the interview in awe).

Rex may be a little to close to the fired department, but it all depends on how the team goes. Coaches with his attitude (for lack of a better word) tend to lose locker rooms fairly quickly when things start going poorly. Now I will say, I do respect Rex as a coach but I also think some of the player movement recently for the Jets have not really fit his scheme.

Regardless of if the seat is hot now or not if we get to the point Ireland goes the Philbin goes too. For two years we bumbled through a coaching search because Ross refused to replace the GM. I don't even want to think the calamity that would take place if we went about a GM search on the premise that the HC stays! Sure some would argue we will just say we hire from Green Bays staff, but not only is that very narrow minded it would be reckless to limit the team to such a narrow field. But hey Holgrem fired his GM in cleveland after one year and hired a gm forcing the current hc on him. How is that working?

Mike Tomlin wasn't hired because he was black. Oh wait, sorry, the phrase was "too hip hop"

No coach deserves to come back after an 0-16 season unless he is coaching an expansion team. Period.
