Dolphins quarterback Joey Harrington still is taking the brunt of what went wrong in Detroit, but NFL analyst Phil Simms came to his defense Monday night.
"I am not a Joey Harrington basher," Simms told local radio station WQAM. "The quarterback can't overcome the bad coaching and bad players. He could not overcome all the bad stuff going on there. I thought he did pretty well for what he had in Detroit."
Simms, who will serve as an analyst during Sunday's Dolphins-Jets telecast at the Meadowlands, said the criticism of Harrington is unwarranted.
"I heard in pre-game shows [Sunday], and I get so upset by it because ex-quarterbacks say things, 'Well, he didn't get it done in Detroit,' " said a usually calm Simms as he began to raise his voice. "I'm saying, 'Well, you didn't get it done on many teams.' It drives me crazy. You can't give the records of the teams to the damn quarterback.
"Yeah, some of it's his fault," he said. "But not what we all put on it."
Simms praised Harrington's quick release and ability to avoid negative plays.
"Even as a rookie, he was almost impossible to sack," said Simms, a 15-year NFL veteran and Super Bowl XXI MVP. "Sometimes, and I've done a few games he's played, he's dropping back and I want to go, 'Slow down. Hold it just a little longer.' It is a tremendous asset but it also can get you in trouble."
Harrington had a tumultuous four-year career after being drafted with the No. 3 overall pick by the Lions in 2002. Harrington never blossomed as expected, ultimately leading to his offseason trade to the Dolphins.
