I know the majority of people here over the past 2 and a half seasons, myself included, have wondered why (especially in the first 2 seasons) they forced Tannehill to stay in the pocket. The offensive line was so bad it was mind boggling that they wouldnt let him scramble and try to improvise a bit. They had him with a mental clock and had to read his progressions and all that. Tannehill took some serious abuse last season just hanging in there in the pocket.

Well, maybe Philbin handled Tannehills development the right way when you take this article about running/scrambling qbs into consideration. Philbin was grooming Tannehill for the long term...as a pocket passer.

Heres a few parts from the article thats interesting and relates to what im talking about with Philbin grooming Tanny as a pocket passer....

So why is the bloom suddenly off the Kaepernick rose?

Now that the 49ers have invested in Kaepernick as the face of the franchise, it's incumbent on the coaching staff to minimize the injury risk. The direct result is less reliance on the read-option and a staunch commitment to developing a pocket passer.

That transition is fraught with growing pains.

A one-read passer with accuracy and touch issues, Kaepernick is on pace for a franchise record 51 sacks despite persistent accusations that he flees the pocket prematurely.

That speaks to a confused signal-caller, being instructed to go through his progressions but still unable to make the correct pre- and post-snap reads.

To be clear, Kaepernick is not the only hyper-athletic young quarterback struggling with the metamorphosis from a college spread offense to consistently delivering the ball from the pocket.

Citing the frenetic play of Kaepernick, Cam Newton and Robert Griffin III, former Colts president and current ESPN analyst Bill Polian told TheMMQB.com's Peter King this week that the NFL is seeing "the incredible erosion of the running quarterback."

Changes happens quickly in the NFL.

Two years ago, the running quarterbacks giving defenses headaches out of the nascent pistol formation and read option were revolutionizing offense as we knew it.

Now ESPN analyst Steve Young, perhaps the most successful dual-threat quarterback in NFL history, believes the tendency to scramble away from pressure actually hinders a quarterbacks' development as a pocket passer.

Young's epiphany came at the behest of Hall of Fame coach Bill Walsh, who knew that breaking the pocket can stress defenses but ultimately fails not only the play design but also the open receivers. In other words, it leads to randomness rather than reliable, consistent success.

"So you talk about the light bulb. I really bought into, 'I've got to exhaust plays.' " Young said. "And the only way you can exhaust plays is -- you have to be an expert. You have to have the patience to stand in there and figure it out."

The sustained dominance of quintessential pocket passers such as Peyton Manning and Tom Brady has proven that the job of a championship quarterback is to "orchestrate and to be a master of the data -- from formation, to blitzes, to coverages," Young explained last week, in an enlightening article with Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Im not excusing Philbin for anything i still think he needs to do a better job as HC, im just giving him credit for taking the right approach with Tannehills development. Guys like Kraepernick and RG3 are being forced to read defenses and be pocket passers and they are like chickens with their heads cut off out there. These running qbs are on the decline and Tannehill has improved every year so far. Its proven that pocket passers have the best success in the league. Dont confuse running/scrambling qbs with guys like Rodgers and Big Ben who are good at extending a play with their elusiveness. Im talking about the guys who their first instinct is to break the pocket and run...like the 3 named in the article.

I'll agree with this and give him credit for it. It's what I think Sherman was trying to do in his transition to the league.

That being said, it still doesn't excuse his record as a HC and his performance in critical games.

Agree...there are things philbin can not be excused for but he definately went the right route making tannehill be a pocket passer.

The difference is tannehill has certainly improved from year 1 to year 3 as a QB however Phailbin has certainly not improved from year 1 to year 3 as a HC

I'm just baffled by people expecting him to be "Rodgers" behind this line. Go watch the GB-ATL game, I swear he signed autographs in between the time the ball was snapped and he threw the pass.

guys.. building a house (franchise), what's the first thing you need? master builder.
and where's the master builder begin? the foundation.
and how does he begin that foundation? cornerstone.
so: would you hire Philbin to build and have him sell you a house with Tannehill as the cornerstone? NFW
now Ross is a World-Class builder; the best on the planet.
my question: how in the hell did he get bamboozled into an untried/unknown HC and an untried/unknown QB and an untried/unknown GM.. for the 2nd time?!!
answer this sanely, and you'll see why a guy like Ross should never-ever-ever try to involve in the day-to-day of this sports 'toy' of his.. he's ill-equipped.

Sorry. But, I have seen very little indication that Ross is anything like Jerry J or Danny S.
