So what would be an ideal statistical season in 2015 for Tannehill? Coach Joe Philbin has a pretty good idea.

“I can sit here and say I want him to throw 34 touchdown passes and I want his QB rating to be 102 and throw nine picks,” Philbin said. “Certainly I want all that stuff.”

Philbin, in a wide-ranging interview with the Palm Beach Post on Sunday, spoke about Tannehill’s development. While he he hopes that Tannehill can have a major statistical season, he knows his quarterback will only approach those numbers if he improves specifics areas of the game.

“The thing to me is I want to see him continue to develop his decision making,” Philbin said. “I want him to continue develop his accuracy. I want him to continue making plays at critical times. Those are the three focal points that I look at the quarterback position.
“I’ve seen really good development in those three areas and I want to see more.”

“As we get better decisions, better accuracy and better playmaking, a lot of those numbers are going to reflect that,” Philbin said. “We’ve seen a good trend in the numbers already and I want to see that continue.

“I envision him being a great decision maker and a highly accurate passer and a playmaker. When I think of the Miami Dolphins quarterback with Ryan Tannehill playing the position, that’s what I see.”

Philbin said Tannehill “definitely” can improve his deep ball accuracy and he added that “it’s not all him.”

Some of it is the chemistry between the receivers and the quarterback. You can’t underestimate that either,” Philbin said. “It’s not just cranking the ball 65 yards down field, two yards outside the numbers or at the goal post. Obviously you’ve got to have arm strength, which he has arm strength. You’ve got to have some touch, which he has some touch. If there’s that extra uncanny knack between two guys, different guys — that’s an area where he and the receivers can improve upon. And with new guys, that’ll take us a little bit of time to work through.”

It’s clear that Philbin believes Tannehill has it and a new group of receivers can help him reach his potential.

Miami has carefully built a WR group that can give Tannehill the right choices. Jennings will be a safety blanket, Cameron will be that red-zone target, Landry is that move-the-chains short route guy, and now you revamped your deep balls with Parker and Stills.

We need a lot more plays like the TD pass to Rishard Mathews, especially when the game is on the line. Not only did it save the o-line from adding another sack to their total but it increased his yards per attempt, TD total, and it probably went a long way to showing his teammates that if you keep playing good things can happen.

The elite QBs make plays like those a half dozen or more times a season. Plays like that are too few and far between from Tannehill.

It's nice to hear Philbin talk about some intangible type traits. It seemed like Hartline and Tannehill kinda had this in Tanny's rookie year. And Landry was getting there with him last year. Would love to see more of it this year.

Damn i'm excited for the 2015 season.

Merely speaking the truth is a blatant shot at Wallace.

Philbin has been really transparent this off season. Coaches can grow tremendously over their tenure has a first time head coach. I think he's finally getting to that point where he feels comfortable about putting things out there for the public. He definitely seems more confident than he's ever been. I'll be at practice thursday, let's see how it goes.
