Ed Wade was fired as general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday after failing to get them into the playoffs during his eight years on the job.

The Phillies went 88-74 this season and finished one game behind NL wild-card winner Houston, and attendance dropped by more than a half-million.

"I think public perception is a big part when you talk about selling," Wade said. "In order to move things forward, if the decision was based on the performance of the club, obviously not getting into postseason is a big role in that, but I also think the fact that I became a lightning rod for criticism for the organization, with me out of the picture, it makes things easier from that respect."

They'll probably hire Ruben Amaro, the assistant GM, or maybe John Hart, formerly of Texas. What do you think, Roman, wherever you are?

I think a lot of people are going to jump all over Cashman if George gets rid of him.

Did you see him crying last night, he is gone. And he is leaving a ton of money behind, but money does not by happiness (well maybe a little)

I'm glad you asked my opinion too. :)

I think the main problem with the Phils was they didn't have solid pitching during most of Ed Wade's term. They finally righted the ship the last couple years and I think letting Larry Bowa go allowed the players to relax a little and bring the team together under Charlie Manuel. But I don't think Manuel is the gonna get them to the playoffs, We need a solid "team guy" and winner as a GM, not Ruben Amaro. The Phils played great down the stretch,,,,Rollins had a hit in the last 36 games, Wagner was clutch in shutting them down as the closer...But we lost a critical game in the final week against the Mets when Urbina fell apart. :yell: But hopefully the Astros can do it....or the White Sox.

My pick for GM: Mike Arbuckle, he was a great scout for the Phils and brought Rollins, Burrell, and Rolen to Philly.

Well as an Avid Phillies fan. I have to say this was the right move. Not only was Ed Wade ruining the team from the front office, but he was ruining it in the aspect that fans were SO fed up Attendance dropped 20 percent. The fans in this town HATED Ed Wade, he was an AWFUL GM that i cant believe lasted 8 years here. He's gone now that era is behind, but let me just get one thing straight. Ed Wade should not be leaving Philadelphia guns blazing, i watched his press conference and it was like he couldn't understand why he was fired. He was bitter, mean, arrogant and now i hate him as a PERSON not just a GM.

Maybe when it comes trade deadline time, you dont just SIT there and do nothing. Maybe you dont trade all-pro players like Scott Rolen and Curt Schilling for PEANUTS. Maybe you dont bring in a BUFFOON for a manager like Charlie Manuel instead of Jim Leyland. Absolutely pathetic....i'm glad the guy is gone, and i hope someone in another city hires him so he can ruin their team as well. This guy has gone under the radar for Baseball fans, he should be recognized as the worst GM in Baseball by ALL.

Reports are they have Dan Duquette # 1 on there list, but would jump all over Cashman if he leaves the Yankees.

I think you mean Jim Duquette (Dan's cousin) and current Met front office employee. Dan has been out of baseball since the Red Sox fired him and trust me Phillies fans you don't want Dan. It wasn't because of the moves he made (however signing Jose Offerman for big bucks was one of his bad moves, also letting a guy named Roger Clemens go) it was also the moves he didn't make (he had offers for Troy O'Leary for a few decent prospects in the middle of O'Leary's decline but rejected it, he also rejected Jim Edmonds for one of the Sox catching prospects who never made it ot the major leagues).

Of course Dan also traded Hethcliff Slocumb for Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek and traded for John Wettland and Sammy Sosa during the strike of 94 (however the comissioner's office vetoed the trade due to the strike).
