Phins OL- Sack Attack in 2011?

The Miami Dolphins had 52 sacks last year, and that SUCKED. On the surface, most would thing that meant that our OL SUCKED, and that was not really the case.

Ten of those 52 sacks were not given up by any player. They were on the team for an unblocked blitzer, a QB stepping into a tackle, etc. Then, there were others, aside from OL starters, who came into play.

Matt Moore was "credited" for 7 sacks because he held the ball too long (aver 4 seconds).

Garner gave up 4 sacks in a half or so vs Philly.

Bush gave up 2, DT 1, Fasano 1, Clay 1.

That brings us to 26, and 9 of those, as you may have guessed belong to Columbo.

My point is that with Big Jake being hurt, a rookie at C, and big questions on the right side, we were not as bad as most believe.

With the new coaches correcting problems, outside the OL, and Columbo gone, we very well could be pretty good.

Moore should have been credited with more sacks cause he ran into some sacks that weren't the O-lines fault. Henne took some as well that should not count against the O-line. Colombo was the biggest culprit with 9 but he and Carey never worked well together and the right side of the O-line was awful. Jake had a really bad year as well he gave up 5.

We had a good number of sacks last year but it seemed like they always came on 1st or 2nd down for our defense.
Then a play or so later a 15 yard pass completion get a 1st down and the sack is wasted.

On the offensive side we just weren't good enough to overcome sacks on any down. Although most came on 3rd down and forced the offense off the field.

I hate to see a sack by our defense only to see the other team pick up the subsequent 1st down.
D has to get those sacks on 3rd down to get off the field.

We were sacked on 3rd down the most because we ran on first and second down and put ourselves in bad down-and-distance situations. Don't think we'll have that problem with Sherman calling the plays. If the other team puts 7 or 8 in the box he's gonna throw and expect the QB and WRs to execute...and he'll be stubborn about it. If teams back off he'll hit the running game. He did it a lot at TAMU.

I just looked up some teams that run ZBS. Redskins, Texans are a couple I know of...Redskins gave up 41 sacks, the year before Shanahan got there they gave up 45...but 16 of those sacks were on John Beck while 25 were on Grossman. Beck played in 4 games and started 3...4 sacks a game with him in there and less than 2 a game when Grossman was in there. The Texans, who have one of the lightest O-lines in the league in terms of weight, gave up 33 sacks. 15 of them to a rookie in T.J. Yates in 6 games and 16 of them to Schaub in his 10 starts. Of course they did get two QBs knocked out for the season, lol.

My guess is well be somewhere in the mid 30's on sacks given up.

The 16 were by other than the OL, and subtracted from the 42, which left 26 for the OL. Take away 4-5 from Columbo, which is average for a RT, and the other 4 did pretty good. Add in, when we ran left, we averaged around 6 yards. When we ran right, it was a bit over 3.

With a healthy "Big Jake" (which Wake has attested to), an improved Pouncey, and a better right side, we could well be looking at a VG OL.

With a healthy "Big Jake" (which Wake has attested to), an improved Pouncey, and a better right side, we could well be looking at a VG OL.

I think the right side will be better but not sure how much better. We have a rookie and a journeyman playing that side. I have some concerns about Incognito in the ZBS as well given he's not the most athletic guy but we'll see how it plays out. Looking forward to Friday to see how we measure up against Tampa.

Agree on all DT. The point of this thread was to explain that when a team gets sacked a lot, it is not all on the OL, which I believe most can now see. The average release time for all QB's is 2.7 seconds. When you hold the ball for over 4, it's not the OL.
