Dolphins | Attend Wright Workout
Sat, 9 Jul 2005 05:30:04 -0700

Sam Farmer, of the Los Angeles Times, reports the Miami Dolphins had five members present at the workout of USC DT Manuel Wright Friday, July 8, including general manager Randy Mueller. Also present was their defensive coordinator and defensive-line coach, who conducted some of the drills for Wright. The Dolphin contingent didn't stick around to watch the end of the workout, however, casting doubt on how much the team is willing to give up for him. The consensus of several scouts Friday was that Wright will be selected in the third round.

Thats a whole lotta people that we sent over there. But now the question is, why didn't they stay until his workout was over?

From the same page.......

NFL supplemental draft candidate DT Manuel Wright drew mixed reviews from his workout for NFL scouts Friday, July 8. "It was a microcosm of what he did in college," one team executive said. "Some good, some bad." Wright ran a 4.97-second 40-yard dash, impressive for a 6-foot-5, 329-pound man, several scouts noted he was not in top shape and looked overly winded between drills. He finished by bench-pressing 225 pounds 16 times, roughly 10 repetitions fewer than scouts typically expect from a top defensive-line prospect. The consensus of several scouts Friday was that Wright will be selected in the third round. The highlight of Wright's workout occurred on the track, when, after grabbing his right hamstring and aborting his first 40, he came back and turned in two good times.

to give the impression that they weren't interested? maybe they were trying reverse psychology, I dont know...

Maybe were really not interested. After all, he did look out of shape which translates to not having a very good work ethic/commitment to conditioning in the offseason. He also was extremely weak in the weight room especially for his position. We have defensive backs and maybe even wide recievers on our team that can put up 225 more than 16 times. And he's shown very little in his college career to warrent a third round pick.

My hope is that we don't go higher than a fourth. Saban doesn't seem like the kind of coach who will give up his draft picks easily. He's philosophy of building a solid team through the draft is well known. Why would he give up his 3rd round pick for a player that failed to impress him and can not come in right away and help the team. Its not like we're in dire need of him right away which was the arguement for giving up a 3rd rounder for lamar gordon.

Don't waste your draft picks on players that you don't see having a bright future.

I think walking away early could me we're VERY interested. Remember, this is a new era where the Dolphins do everything they can to confuse and cast doubt on their intentions. Just look back to the days and weeks leading up to the draft. IIRC, Ronnie Brown said that we made little or no contact with him prior to drafting him. I'm curious as to what point in the workout did we leave. We could have been disgusted.

You like his size/speed ratio. But you don't like the fact that he was out of shape on such an important day.

This should tell people how much work Wright will need this year with a strengthening coach. I would like to know more about how he looked in his drills and I was glad to see his 40 times were fast for a DL.

It also says a lot about commitment with Wright knowing about his workout date for a couple of months ago in May. He should have been training for this. I would love to pickup a potential starting DT a year early but I question his commitment.

he is a great pass rusher for being a DT and I'm not worried about his poor weight lifting as that can still be improved before the season starts with the conditioning coach. he has good potential, he is big and athletic. I think all of the bad things he did are coachable

IMO i dont think that Wright will be ready to play this year. He will need a year to learn the defense and get into better shape. Hopefully next year he will be our NT and a beast on the dline

we need a DT for at least depth and he can definitely start in the future if not right away

Forget about giving up a pick for this guy. Sure he has the size and speed but if he's lacking the strength and stamina, he'll never make it. Saban loves his draft picks and I don't think he'll give up a first day pick for him.

I hope we dont comit the same errors of the previous regime in giving up high future draft picks to fill immediate "Needs".That how you get behind the 8 ball and miss real opportunities in the future.

the 40 time doesnt bother me but 2 things do...1) he only did 16 reps for 225 lbs-not good for a dt were you need a lot of strength...2) not in great shape...he knew the date of his workout so he should of been in better shape...i dont think we should give up more than a 4th for this kid...

maybe his stock will slip after this and we can snap him for a 6th rounder

I hope we don't give up our third round pick to get this kid.sure,he might have potential, but I would rather wait and see what we can get in next years draft.every year, there are some good players in the third round, this year will be no different.
