Now, with that posted, we need to be clear on something:

IT IS MEANINGLESS

No NFL coach/GM is going to be using that exact board and counting up points to see if a trade works for them. Some coaches/GMs may make up their own custom value board like Jimmy Johnson did back in the day, and some may choose to look at trades in another way. It might be a good yardstick to make sure your trade idea posted here for discussion isn't absurd on its face, but that's about it.

ive always looked as the board as kind of reference for gms and coaches. i dont think any coach follows it to the T.

I think any personnel who find such a chart useful likely customize it based on their evaluation as to where the dropoff in talent and demand hits as well as team needs. For instance, that chart puts a real premium on the first pick with a big drop to the second pick, a big drop to the third pick, and a big drop to the fourth pick. That would really only be valid for cases where there are three well defined top players where there is broad consensus about the order of the players. If you have a situation where there is just one top player with a bunch of talent that is about equal behind him, that first drop might be more like 800 points and the other drops might not be nearly as big. That would appear to be the situation this year.

I have to disagree with you JJ.

Just about every team uses the chart to determine draft pick trade values although some teams have charts that differ slightly from the one shown.

Saban has stated repeatedly that he will adhere to the chart value on draft day.
There is no reason not to believe him.

Oh my god i can't believe what i'm about to say. I totally 100% agree with you.

I find it hard to believe they follow it to a T, I would think it is more of a guide.

For now I can only find a reference to the chart from a Saban interview at the combines.I know he has said he would adhere to the value chart in another interview but I have yet to find it.Still looking.

On if not having a fifth or sixth-round pick will inhibit him from trading up in the draft) – “I don’t think the fifth and sixth-round picks have anything to do with that. All the picks have a certain value in the draft. There is actually a value board that you can look at to see what your particular picks are worth to give you a little bit of a value-judgment on ‘what do we have trade to move up or down? What is a good value?’ I think that’s probably based on most of the deals that have been made in the past. But your fifth- and sixth-round picks don’t have a whole lot of juice. We have three seventh-round picks. They don’t have a lot of juice, either. I think that unless you have multiple picks, you either gut your draft to move up if that’s what it’s going to take, or you say, ‘it’s not worth it based on some of the other issues that we have.’ And obviously you have to like the person that you’re willing to pay the premium to get by moving up in the draft

That just indicates that he has his people prepare a chart, not that he uses the chart above. Remember, you disagreed with my statement that some GMs prepare custom charts. Show us how you know Saban uses the chart above.

I said each team has their own chart which varies slighly from the one exhibited depending on the perceived strength of the draft class and the criteria each team uses.I dont know which one Saban is using but he has said he would adhere to it .IMO he said that to serve notice to any potential suitors for a trade up that thats what they would have to aim for.

The charts from team to team cant vary too much .It would be like speaking different languages while trying to work out last-minute deals while trying to beat the clock during the draft.Thats one of its purposes. To take the guesswork out.

It is a guideline rather that rule but I think you will find that all draft day trades will be fairly close to the values exhibited in that chart.

Yeah? Why do you think the trade Denver made with the Jets was so out of line with that chart?
