Great post! Mostly agree with everything, also glad the first point you made was about the conservative ways. Because I think thats the number one thing keeping this team down.
Its also not too hard to figure out what happened here. Flores got unexpected success last year playing this exact strategy, play aggressive on defense, dont **** it up on offense and somehow, things will work out. You'll get a crucial takeaway, the other team will be the one to make a mistake, plays that succeed once in a million time will happen when you need them the most.
Fins are still top 5 in blitz %, but this time around, they're 32nd in the NFL in hurry %. The Fins passing game is still top 10 in the league at not ****ing it up, but the luck aspect of turnovers is showing up in the running game were only 2 teams have more fumbles than they do. AND the Fins are only average at creating takeaways.
What you have here is a HC doing the same thing that made him successful last year wondering why the hell it isnt working this time around. I get that coaches dont get to have a gambling crash course before they get hired to these positions but this was predictable, any seasoned gambler could have bet on this happening before the season even began.
Flores needs to understand that in this NFL, you're not going anywhere with any kind of consistency if your plan is to run your team through your defense while your offense plays merely to not **** it up. I thought they understood that concept when they signed and drafted speed at WR, I was wrong... Its become blatantly clear that they're still playing to not **** it up. Waddle is still in the bottom 9 of the NFL in targeted air yards, this is not indicative of the type of WR Waddle is, it tells you this offensive staff is conservative as ****.
To tell you the truth, its very hard to tell someone who had early success to change is ways because it was mostly because of luck. They'll usually tell you to **** off unless... They get abruptly met with a big *** wall strongly bringing them back down to earth. Now Flores is probably starting to think his approach might not be all that good after all and the good part is, he has about no choice but to start using the only viable strategy available to him at this point. Which also happens to be the correct strategy in this NFL.
Being desperate should urge him to open up the offense, try and score more points and play with reckless abandon and maybe tone it done on D and try and not **** up there instead. All of a sudden, the offense will score more points, it will put the defense in a much better situation overall, he'll start to win games and wonder why the **** he hadnt thought of that before ****ing up the season.
Or he'll just be a hard headed SOB and keep playing losing football because its his show and nobody ****s with him.
