Bill Polian, the Hall of Fame NFL executive, said the Dolphins are “not far away” from being a playoff team.

And Polian, who has voiced support for quarterback Ryan Tannehill recently, also spoke highly of coach Joe Philbin.

“The arrow’s been (pointing) up for the last two or three years,” Polian said about the Dolphins on Friday at the NFL Scouting Combine.

“They’re not far away. So if you’re a Dolphins fan, things are looking up from my perspective.”

Polian, who serves as a NFL analyst for ESPN, said Tannehill’s improvement should make Dolphins fans feel good.

“The nice thing about the Miami Dolphins is that Ryan Tannheill is in place and he gets better every year,” Polian said. “That arrow has been up every year and I believe it’s going to continue to be up. So that’s Point 1. That’s the best news of all if you’re a Dolphins fan.

“And I’ve said this numerous times, I think Joe Philbin’s done a great coaching job, he and his staff.”

Polian said the Dolphins to plug some holes, such as finding a workhorse running back.

“Now they certainly could use a running back, there’s no question about that,” he said, “and that will help Ryan Tannehill.”

Polian didn’t seem concerned about wide receiver Mike Wallace, who was unhappy about how he was used for much of the second half of the season.

“The receiver position will get sorted out,” Polian said. “They’re on top of that.”

I'm on the opposite of Polian....Get Tannehide some real WR's not some overpaid flag football players.

I agree about Tannehill, but I am not sure I am buying the Philbin and the coaching staff are doing better part. Philbin 's timeouts and clock management probably cost us the Packers and Lion's game. Coyle's D fell apart down the stretch. I think the coaching staff needs to improve if we are talking about playoffs.

I don't trust Polian's assessment of the team if he believes that a work horse running back would be the biggest thing needed to help Tannehill. The offensive line has been downright awful at times during the past two seasons and I do not believe the skill position players around Tannehill are as good as many on this site want to give them credit for. Add to that, a defense that collapsed down the stretch this past season. I have mixed feelings about the coaching staff. Some things I like and some things I despise.

Polian must be senile to think Philbin has done a great coaching job...

I think the skilled position players are pretty decent. But I agree with everything else you posted. If I had a choice to upgrade the skill positions or upgrade the line I would go line. I think that hinders the whole offense.

Offensive line is a major need. That said…Im not going to disagree with Polian on the RB call. I want to give Tannehill better weapons on the outside as much as anyone…but Im also pretty sure Todd Gurley makes this team drastically better…and makes Ryan Tannehill drastically better.

Gurley wasn't letting anyone look at his knee at the combine. Will be interesting.

I love Lamar as much as the next guy but we need a power back to truly wear down the defense. Would love to be like cincy with hill/ ego. We need a hill like back and Lamar. Damien in the mix too. Go fins !

Agreed but apparently that was what Dr. Andrews told him to do. Andrews didn't want those guys pushing and prying on his knee right now…which I don't blame him. All about the medical for him…but if it checks out this spring he is going to make some team very very happy.
