Saban said the team will do its usual homework on three linebacker prospects who are available for the NFL's supplemental draft July 13. Ahmad Brooks of Virginia, Jason Berryman of Iowa State and Hutchinson Community College (Kan.) linebacker David Dixon are the most notable players available for the draft.

I personally think we should focus on Berryman or Dixon because they are more suited to the passrush OLB position.

I like Brooks because he is the most talented out of all of the supplemental prospects. However, his off the field issues are a concern. If Saban decides to get any one of these guys, I'd be happy, no matter who it is because Saban is THE MAN!!

It depens on how high a pick they will command. I think we can get some talent from salary cap and roster cuts and save our picks for next year, but if we can get one of these guys for a late second day pick its worth considering.

when is the workout of these 3 players? i read some good stuff about dixon, i would be happy if we get him or brooks, but brooks is the best lb available...

''We'll do our homework on all of them as we would with any player who was going through the regular draft,'' Saban said. ``But we're not going to compromise our principles and values just because we might have a need at that position.''
The Dolphins are expected to have Donnie Spragan, Keith Newman and Sedrick Hodge compete for the starting strong-side linebacker position. However, the team had expressed interest in veteran free agent LaVar Arrington earlier in the offseason, so a need might still be there.
Brooks is the best known of the three linebackers, but has battled weight and off-field issues during his career. He is considered more of an inside linebacker. Berryman and Dixon are more of the pass-rush types to fill an outside spot.

What do we know about Dixon?

That he's about 6'2" and 245 pounds, runs in the 4.4 range and has a 42 to 44 inch vertical...and was super duper productive at the community college level in the type of areas you'd expect him to be (something like 10 blocked kicks in 2 years, millions of tackles, about 10 sacks, somethin like that).

I like Berryman though too, I think he's very talented...came on as a freshman in 2003 and made a huge splash. He plays DE like a pursuit linebacker, racking up like 8 tackles a game as a frosh...with a few sacks, a bunch of pressures, and some TFLs. Then he got in the legal mess.

He came back in 2005 and wasn't quite the active tackler he was as a frosh but he was even more polished as a pass rusher. He finished off the year going up against a very polished TCU offensive line in the Houston Bowl and got somewhere between 3.5 and 4.5 sacks depending on who you talk to. His D-Coord couldn't stop raving about how he completely dominated the game and really had an effect on it...allowing them to keep it a lot closer than they might have otherwise.

The part I liked was that as a pass rusher his growth was delayed a little but he definitely seemed to get better as he went along, and then he really just turned it up five notches when the game got important...national audience, houston was his home town, etc.

I also like Berryman, as his physical tools are excellant, but his off field problems cost him 258 days in jail. Maybe it straightened his head out, I hope so. Dixon, failed academically, from Kansas St., and transferred to Hutchinson C.C., Kansas.

When I was reading up on Berryman's history, he seems to have some real anger management problems.

One of the reasons he got jail was because he was already on probation for kicking in his girlfriend's car window. Then he got into the altercation that resulted in him beating up a guy, stealing his wallet with $4 in it, and taking another guy's cell phone. From what I read about the incident it seemed more like the result of an argument and fight rather than like, him waiting around a corner waiting to mug someone.

So when he came back to the program part of the agreement was to take anger management classes...and by all means they appear to have worked.

There's no way I'd even rate this guy as bad a character risk as Marcus Vick.

I say brooks if it's a 5 round pick nothing higher than that. I say Dixon if brooks get's taken before the 5th.

Brooks has attitude and weight problems to go with his off-field antics. Berryman spent 8 months in jail, but seems to have his head on straight now, and no weight or attitude problems, take Berryman any day. Besides I believe Berryman would cost less in the way of a pick.

In Saban We Trust!
