My question to the members is this, If Ireland pulls off a good to great draft, and combined with a great offseason, does he earn another year of employment if we happen to go 8-8, or 7-9 again?

I like what he has done in the off season and feel he will work with Philbin on picks this upcoming draft, but we have to draw the line somewhere.

If Jeff does his part, and we fail, I wonder if Philbin gets the blame thus giving Jeff more time in that corner office.

I'm curious to see if members think that if Jeff pulls out a nice draft, is he automatic for next year?

The team has to have a winning season and likely a playoff berth for him to stick around. So far he has hit a home run in the offseason with free agents, but he he still has two more at bats. The draft and the upcoming season. If he has another good draft and the team is a winner and playoff team he is not going anywhere. If the team loses this year, Ireland AND Philbin are probably out the door.

The work HAS to translate into WINS...i think, before he is safe.

it wont be a year, any GM extention will need to be long term.

And its too early to say, ask again after the draft.

Earned another year? NO, NO, HELL NO!

He should have been swept out of the organization a year ago with the rest of the Parcells trash.

Uk, I realize what you're saying, and you are correct it will be a multiyear deal. So, to me that makes it even more important he does a good job. Because Ross will be stuck paying that contract if he decides Jeff cannot KEEP pulling this off.

I did not look too much into Philbin being fired because he has done a good job, and has not made a history in just one year.

What the ****? Are you kidding? You all might be drooling over what he has done so far, but you were last year too! And the year before that...how did that turn out? Until you play the season, nothing is decided.

He needs to win 9 games to save his job. Anything less and he will get fired.

Jeff has gotta show he's earned another season with a winning season and a playoff berth. He's done a good job of filling some of our holes in FA, but he's still got a draft to preside over and a 2013 season which will undoubtedly make or break him. Ross will soon get impatient if we have another less than stellar season and look to move on. Our owner is getting up there in age and there's already talk of him selling the team within the next few years. He definitely wants to be part of a winner before he moves on from this franchise.

Ireland won't be fired this year because Philbin will get a third year irregardless of the team's record. If/when Ireland is fired, it will be a package deal with Philbin.

Knew this was coming. A month ago, everyone on here was screaming "if we dont win he wont return!!!!". He signs a receiver and linebackers and everyone is beginning to get cold feet.

No, he has not earned another year. Going 7-9 or 8-8 is not good enough. I want 11 wins or a playoff berth. His free agency period has been good but not awe inspiring(cutting Dansby and Burnett over Misi? Come on...) like many of the usual suspect claim. He basically filled the holes he created and signed players at positions hes already addressed in years past. This offseason was eerily similar to '10 and somewhat like '11.

Next offseason, like the OP suggested, expect many of the usual suspects to begin a "It wasnt Irelands fault" campaign. We had a hard schedule! Look at the potential of our draft picks! He did everything right at the time! It was Philbins fault! They will try and convince everyone that Ireland is completely powerless and merely watched this team struggle. People need to ignore it and recall threads like this. Like every job in the world, you either start getting positive results or you are fired. That finally needs to apply to Jeff Ireland.

And no, before people start up with it: losing Ireland wont cost us Philbin. General managers are hired after coaches are already established all the time. Ross handpicked Philbin, hes not going to let him go after 2 years. Just like Parcells didnt let his handpicked general manager go after 2 years.

Should be more than 2 options. There is still plenty of offseason left for him to either completely nail it or completely bungle it. And then we still have to see if some of the risks actually work out. Is Ellerbe a one-hit wonder? Will his second round pick from last year develop into a solid starter? Does Miller live up to the hype he's getting? Will Thomas stop being a turd? Etc.

Way too many questions at this point, but if he goes heaving on the o-line in the top of the draft and/or trades for Albert, count me in the "fire him" crowd.

Ireland won't be fired this year because Philbin will get a third year irregardless of the team's record. If/when Ireland is fired, it will be a package deal with Philbin.

His contract expires at the end of this year.

No, if they have a miserable season with 5 or 6 wins, he is in trouble. 7 is very much pushing it.
