So...

We've seen our new coach take a tough stance on a guy that wasn't expected to make the team anyway; what will he do, confronted with an incident involving his talented starting TE?

I believe Saban will do something, but I don't know whether it will be extra work, a fine or as much as a suspension. If I was Randy, I would be worried about what the NFL will do to me. With the history of the NFL, how does a situation like this usually get handled?

Well, the NFL usually waits until a legal determination is made in the case - a conviction, even a suspended sentence or plea-bargain. Then they bring the wrath of Tagliabue to bear.

My point in making this thread - aside form providing us an entertaining sideshow in an exceedingly boring time - is to compare the two cases; one, that of Quintin Williams, who had scarcely a chance to make the team, and the other that of Randy McMichael, our starting TE, whom some have touted as a possible Pro-Bowl player.

Williams showed an unfortunate lack of good judgment in racing at speeds in excess of 100mph; McMichael is involved in a physical altercation with his wife, his second in a year - both involving alcohol.

Neither has been afforded due process in the criminal justice system. Williams found himself unemployed the second day after his mishap. I want to know what the consensus is here regarding Randy's fate, given the similarity of circumstances.

Unfortunately, this is a business, and the Dolphins would eat a lot of money if they dropped Randy like a hot rock for behavior which is only (in my mind) a little better than QW's. But I do think a fine is forthcoming.

I found it interesting that Saban went beyond the traditional "we can't comment yet" to speak out against the alleged behavior. Just another small but encouraging sign.

Of course, the answer is yes, in some way. He will be punished regardless of what happens with the law in this case. Two time offender, embarassment to the organization again and after so many accused Saban of grandstanding in the Q. Williams situation....Randy better hold his breath on this one.

Is he a two time offender? I believe the charges were dropped the first time.

Also, while one can read into the decision to drop Williams after the speeding incident, I believe the official reason was due to lack of performance... I believe the CBA prevents a team from releasing a player due to off the field issues. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but usually some other face is put on it.

I'd like to see the situation play out in the legal system (if it gets that far) before the team takes any action beyond reccomending (strongly) and facilitating counseling sessions for the couple, and maybe some anger management courses for Randy.

If this plays out where charges are pressed and he's guilty, then the team can consider something more. But I think any action is premature.

I do, however, think it's good that Saben is expressing concern about the events beyond a blanket 'No Comment' statement. I think this is a good opportunity for the coach can express himself publically and privately to the player without offical team sanctions.

But I'm still worried about ordering the #81 Jersey.

Interesting. I wondered about that.

I might be wrong. First of all, there is a Conduct Detrimental to the club provision in article 8, and a 'non-injury grievence' in article 9. But I think either one would be appealed and or a drawn out process.

(Always good to have the CBA handy as a reference).

But I remember the issue coming up with the Williams story and when the Cowboys released Carter.

I'm not going by the legal aspect of his conduct. I'm going by the code of conduct that I'm sure this team has, almost as much as I'm sure that being arrested could be considered conduct detrimental to the team no matter if a conviction is ever reached. Especially, in this circumstance because of the preceding incident. There almost has to be some sort of penalty for that alone, IMO.

Not only for punitive measures against him but, also to keep the team from suffering another black eye.

I said "no" in the poll, but as I read these responses, I think it's likely that we'll see a nominal punishment. I'd be shocked if McMike was suspended though, at least before there's a conviction or plea bargain.

I think a slap on the wrist is comming with perhaps a fine and if anything a 1 game suspension to be served at coaches choosing(pending prosicution). My understanding is that coach was on vacation untill this friday (according to 790 the ticket) so maybe he doesn't want to deal with it yet

I think Saban will wait and see what the law does to McMike. That will determine the severity of the punishment if there is one.

I don't think anything will happen to him. He's a future probowler.

Oh, and Hi guys. This is my first post as a premie :D
