Clinton Portis went down with a dislocated shoulder after 3 plays in the Redskins first pre-season game.

It illustrates the reason the Dolphins really need a starting calibre backup. Nothing against Sammy Morris - I want him on the team and believe he is a solid player as a #3 RB, occasional 3rd down back, and top special teamer. He's also a top notch team player and quality character - from what I've read.

However, I just don't see him as a legit starter. The Portis injury won't put him out for the season but it could be several weeks. That could really be the difference in several games if it happens in the regular season. I think Ronnie Brown has the potential, if used correctly in both the running and passing attacks, to be a top tier back (in the top 10 in the league). But, I think the quality drops off significantly after that.

The Dolphins most certainly do not need a starting calibre backup (as though any such thing is even available).

What the Dolphins have and will make do with if something terrible happens to Brown is a solid corps of runners who can combine to handle the tasks necessary. The Redskins don't have that, and they may get burned.

How long is he expected out. I had my first NFL draft today and i have him as RB. Go f-in figure. I have Ronnie also but this still sucks!!

They took him in for an MRI...I believe his shoulder popped out and then popped back into place. They did not say how long he will be out. Probably for the rest of the preseason as a precaution.

I'd be fine with Morris if anybody besides him had proved at least reasonably capable.

the RB competition is interesting to me, Morris is our back-up that is a fact but the 3rd RB spot is open competition between Minor and Harris. didn't see Riggs Jr. get any carries the other night. I think Harris wins the 3rd spot

just saw that Riggs had 3 carries for 9 yards, Minor did well on only 2 carries he had 20 yards

im hoping harris gets a shot. big punishing runner. hopefuly he can produce against the first and second string if he gets a shot

ronnie is punishing in his own right, after that i think we are fne with sammy and if kayjay can step up we are in excellent shape. im of the opinion that riggs is garbage and mino is worthless except as a special teamer.

Redskins fans say 2-4 weeks as of right now.

i'm afraid i disagree here, and agree wholeheartedly with the poster...

sammy morris is a solid teammate, excellent special teams player, and a serviceable RB in a pinch... but to rely on him for 3-4 weeks would be a mistake... going back to his buffalo days, he is a bit of a fumbler, and he runs rather upright with little wiggle...

i was not overwhelmed with any of our other guys... even as backups... quite frankly, i see other teams with tons of depth at the running back position, Cincinnati tonight being one of them... Jacksonville, Tennessee and Dallas being others...

IMO, the ideal backup running back is a guy like Verron Hayes of Pittsburgh... a little fire hydrant with a bit of shake n bake who takes a no-nonsense approach, hits the whole hard, hurts to tackle, and protects the football...

sorry folks, but pure first-down RB depth is NOT a strength of this team... not right now...

The panthers have a lot of depth at running back, and there is a good chance one of thier guys gets cut(along with jacksonville's). I could definitely see us taking a crack at one of them. (I don't want to put words in his mouth, but I thought I saw CK talking about the panthers depth, and having to relinquish some of it due to roster space).
