The quicker people get use to the fact that Joey Porter and Matt Roth are our starting OLBs, the better. As I've been saying, Porter was a WOLB in Pitt and we moved him to SOLB with disastrous consequences. JT is gone so moving him back should have been a no-brainer, but we seemed to *****foot around it. Meanwhile, for all the crap Awsi Dooger talks about the idea, Matt Roth is the best OLB we have not named Joey Porter. Charlie Anderson appears to be your typical flash in the pan type that has one good week of TC practice to get people excited (as they tend to do with speed rushers) and then does nothing since (see Abe Wright). The best work I've seen Quentin Moses do has been as a down DE, which isn't saying a whole lot because he has a long way to go.

Will Matt Roth win any Pro Bowls at OLB? Doubtful. But he's a strong presence against the run and he's a 4.80 kind of speed guy with decent agilities, and just because he never developed a speed rush doesn't mean he can't be almost adequate in coverage...and so far that's what he appears to be.

The biggest weakness for him as an OLB is pass rush, but as a SOLB, that's not as big an issue anyway. Joey Porter's got the better pass rush so he should be at WOLB.

BTW that article does have somewhat of a false premise, I think. Judging by those first couple of sentences, anyway. Langford and Merling started at the DE spots in the first preseason game, and Roth started at SOLB in the first preseason game as well. The only difference from the first game to the second is Porter was out injured in the first game and in this game he came in and played WOLB.

Hey CK, where's the Jags writeup?? You doin one??

I don't think I have the ability to write something of any quality. It was not on my cable feed here at home so I don't have the thing DVR'd. I managed to watch like 80% of it at a family barbecue down on Palm Island...but I hate just doing something detailed on just a first viewing.

I'll probably end up throwing something up anyway.

Needless to say the players I "felt" (to borrow a Tony Sparano phrase) were:

1. Ricky Williams (how could you not?)
2. Ted Ginn, Jr. (like actually for really real too, not just optimism)
3. The OL (no specific names on a first viewing, LOTS of time for Chad Henne)
4. Rod Wright
5. Matt Roth
6. Paul Soliai
7. Kendall Langford
8. Channing Crowder
9. Yeremiah Bell
10. Keith Davis
11. Dan Carpenter (making the FO look genius for releasing a damn fine kicker)
12. Reggie Torbor

And I don't know who punched that ball out of MJD's hands as he was heading for the end zone, whoever it was though gets a big fat gold star.

A gold star for Paul Soliai.

Well I'll be damned. Paul Soliai gets a BIG gold star for that game then because he was making plays even aside from that. Wow, that's a very encouraging development for big Paul, a guy I thought had first round talent coming out of last year's draft.

I tell ya, Jason Ferguson is a perfect guy for Paul to learn behind. I think Keith Traylor should have been perfect to learn behind too but sometimes I wonder how much Keith actually made any effort to help the younger guys. Ferguson's perfect because he's never gotten by on pure physical attributes, always by being a beast in his mind, using his hands extremely well, understanding leverage, etc. They always say the guys with all the natural talent in the world don't usually make the best coaches. Maybe Ferg's a good influence on the young Soliai.

Or maybe Soliai was just a damn rookie and (once again) the peanut gallery were WAY too effing quick to close the book on a guy's career based on a rookie season.

Ronnie Brown is the next target on the board now that Beck is invisible. I'm not kidding.

Glad to see Soliai improving his game cuz the guy was absolutely getting bent over last year. Especially with the size he's blessed with, he was downright horrible last year.

if ronnie had lasted the entire season he would've shut up everyone about his talent and his health as it is, this season people will still have doubts about both. :(

I don't know why Porter was moved to SOLB either? WOLB has 1 duty; get upfield and create havoc. Playing the run is primarily what the SOLB does as well as cover the TE.

Regardless of who plays SOLB, covering the TE may be a problem. Is Moses good enough yet or should he just backup Joey @ WOLB?

I was glad to see Soliai do well. Hopefully, the lights come on for that other player from the Beehive state and I don't mean Murphy, Denney, or Poppinga.

WILDBILL: if, if, if if!!!!!

that is one of the big knocks on ronnie, HE CANT STAY HEALTHY!!

and IF your not on the field, all the talent in the world DOESNT MATTER!!

so, he blows his knee right as he starts to actually do something 3 years in.

now, he has a busted thumb.

so you cant say the guy hasnt been getting a fair shake. heck, he got drafted
#2 over all and NEVER started for any team he was on, hi school OR college!!

rb STILL has much to prove.

Wouldn't it be a nice extra bonus if PS truned out to be another important piece we weren't counting on? Could it be the luck we've been missing, isn't really luck at all? More likely poor coaching and poor decisions? Amazing what proper motivation can do to a young football player. Now I'm not counting my chickens as I'm still quite skeptical, but BP and company bring so much more to this team then we could have imagined. I think WH should get all the credit if this thing turns around and we simply become a sloid coached, fundamentally sound team. He's been trying to bring success to Miami he's just missed on his choices, but his heart was in it. We are truly lucky fans, IMO.

I'm psyched about the progression of Soliai. We were so thin at that position and it's such an important position in the 3-4 D. If Ferguson went down, god forbid, and we didn't have a quality backup, we could've been screwed and forced to play mostly 4-3, which would limit our ability to throw different packages and schemes at teams.

I remember in the 1st. game, I saw Soliai stand up his guy and drive him back several feet which he appeared to do with ease.
