Offense:

QB - This is the biggest negative, right now, imo (some will argue the OL is); That said, I think the presence of Frerotte who is not that old (34) and who knows the offense, will help. I think he'll be the starter b/c Saban has no reason to promote Feeley beyond his talent (which is inconsistent). At the least, Frerotte can give us two-three solid years. The major plus here? Better coaching - VASTLY better coaching.

RB - I personally think Ricky will be a big positive. He won't be the Ricky of old, but people need to stop comparing him to that. So what?! If he's 3/4 Ricky, he'll be fine. He may not have the same power, but he will be very quick (and he was surprisingly fast two years ago). Plus, he has until October to regain his weight and be in shape - that's three and a half months. At the same time, the nice thing is that Ricky will not be relied upon to be a star. Ronnie Brown and whoever else makes it into the lineup will give us a MUCH improved unit over last year.

WR/TE - If Boston can stay healthy and keep his weight down where it is - this could be a surprisingly good unit. I was not high on it from last year, but I think there will be some surprises here. McMichael will be solid. The real challenge will be finding #2/3 TE's who can block really well.

OL - A big question mark but with the better coaching and the youth - we'll be much better. They got smashed last year but they have youth (which means lots of room for improvement at every position) more talent than many think, hunger, and the best coach in the business. This unit won't be Denver or Pittsburgh, but it will be much improved.

This offense won't be great, mainly b/c of the QB spot and some other question marks. But, it will be much better than the 4-12 offense of last year - good enough to get us 4 more games, imo. I see a slow start but lots of improvement - so be patient.

Defense:

DL - We have a lot of good size and speed here. The only question is Chester. If he can't go, we could be weak up the middle. He and Traylor are the real X-factors. Nevertheless, the overall talent level is much improved from last year. The other factor that will really help the D is the fact that we won't be the MOST PREDICTABLE DEFENSE in the WORLD as we have been the last 5 years, Dave W!!! Even the Pats got away with 5 LB's quite often. I think Saban may have to do some smoke and mirrors to protect the DT's if the Big guys aren't healthy. But, he'll be solid.

LB - Another improved position, though not tremendously so. We still need some size here. The key will be Seau and Zach remaining healthy. Their smarts and the new schemes should really play into their hands. Of course, if Channing Crowder is healthy and gets a lot of PT - with the use of Bowens and JT - this position could be very good - much improved.

DB's - The injuries really hurt after the loss of Surtain. However, the style of D Saban will play will not put quite as much pressure on the CB's to line up man-to-man, like Wanny's D did. Hopefully, Madison and Tebucky will be able to lead the group effectively.

Finally, this team has too many question-marks to really succeed this year. Certainly, some of those Q-marks will be answered positively. But, when you have that many, the odds are they won't all get answered. Nevertheless, I see us improving to 8-8, surprising a few teams, and finding out where the weaknesses are so that Saban will be able to build those next year. We may not start fast, but I don't think this team will finish poorly (barring late season injuries).

I feel good about the team. Hopefully Mueller will find us a good QB in the next year or so, around whom the team can build.

Great analysis! I agree this team will probably start slow with all new coaches, system and alot of new players. My hope is that after mid year they start clicking and by end of year they turn into a team that nobody wants to face down the stretch. I don't see playoffs but it would be nice to have identified like you mentioned a couple spots to fix and then look out the next year.

nice write up.

speaking of boston he just walked into my store (gnc) and bought some supplements, i'm a little star struck right now.

It's official... the Sun-Sentinal, Miami Herald, and Palm Beach Post should look no further than finheaven.com for there Dolphin publications. Great post.

That's pretty cool. I hope he keeps his size down in the 215-220 range. It will lighten the load on his legs and give him some added quickness. The 240-260 business is ridiculous. We really need speed and another threat to go with Chambers.

I don't know why there's so much hype about Boston. As a rival fan, I am more concerned about Booker having had a full year getting familiar w/ his teammates which should compliment Chambers. He did well at the later part of the season w/ a horrible Porncoach.

Boston wasn't hired by Saban w/ huge expectations as his min. vet salary indicates.

did you say anything to him about the team or himself??

he intrigues me this year. he seems completely free from that sense of self absorbsion that seems to be ever apparent in wide receivers. his head is in the right place, now he just has to show it out on the field.

great post...although i think we are going 10-6...our worst position last year was o-line...it will be much improved...not great...quarterback is a huge ??? but having a way better o-line and running back will really help out frerotte/feeley...the defense will make up for the losses of surtain, poole and timbo with the new schemes and unpredictability...remember all the negativity that surrounded the team after ricky left, thats all gone...injuries to boston, chester, timbo and seau last year really hurt...having a real offensive coordinator whos going to attack the defense...what a concept...besides being much improved, we will be a helluva a lot more exciting to watch!!!

Nice post.

I'm wondering why everybody considers WR such a deep position. I think Chambers is a GOOD receiver, Booker is OK, Thompson hasn't shown me anything and Boston is a big question mark.

I hope Linehan can come in a make a big difference, but we shouldn't feel so comfortable at WR.

I agree with all your offense analysis, but I don't see how you can say that our d-line and linebackers are improved over last year. At DE we are strong with the addition of Carter, although he's old and not the future. Holliday is a quality backup. But we are thin (and old) at DT, Chester's a question mark and Timbo's gone. Don't underestimate what our DT's have meant to our LB's throughout the years.

LB corp is unproven at best and how many more years can we wring out of Seau? I agree there's potential with Crowder and Pope, but at best we're even with last year.
Secondary is scary right now.

I agree that different coaching and schemes can still make this a good defense, but I think we're clearly weaker on D this year talent wise with our proven best players starting to face their declining years. I think Saban will continue the youth movement on D next year, so I'm not worried. If Oline responds, then we're a qb away from a very talented, young offense for years to come. Kind of a flip flop from all those years of a dominant D and weak O.

I think we have the QB to build around, he's like a 1 yr + guy with nothing but upside..i.e., learn to read the D, has the arm, and he'll be solid. Coaching should help with reading D's. Reps will help with comfort level...the only reason I see him starting slow is because this is a new O. Otherwise I think he would come out lighting up the field. I don't think QB is the weakest part of the O. For some reason I see more in AJ than you guys after looking at Griese, Woody, Jensen, Kosar, Marino, Brian Greise, and Fielder. Yea I've been around to watch all the QB's since Shula's arrival. Certain QB's weren't mention becaue they weren't the premire ones. BTW, where's the positives for this position, you called this thread the positives on O and D.

RB - I personally think Ricky will be a big positive. He won't be the Ricky of old, but people need to stop comparing him to that. So what?! If he's 3/4 Ricky, he'll be fine. He may not have the same power, but he will be very quick (and he was surprisingly fast two years ago). Agree, while brown learns, Gordon is there to help. Ricky will take aleast 2 games to get into it..he still has to learn the O too.

WR/TE - If Boston can stay healthy and keep his weight down where it is - this could be a surprisingly good unit. I was not high on it from last year, but I think there will be some surprises here. McMichael will be solid. The real challenge will be finding #2/3 TE's who can block really well.

Last year's unit wasn't bad, play calling and coaching was. The fact that you didn't have hot routes and a bad OL didn't help this unit either. The key to this unit is D. Thompson, does he still make catches like the Pat's game. Boston if he's healthy and can play like his old self is gravy. We also need Gilmore and Welker to step up. The season is long and someone will get hurt.

Your whole analysis on O should have started here. This caused every other aspect of this O to falter last year. We never got a good read on AJ, (plus Wanny not allowing him to develope in TC and offseason), Booker and RB's because of this unit right here. Right now, I think the only real question is LT. I think Jeno, Hadnot, and Mcdougal will be solid..I still have my concerns about Seth. Since we're going to more zone blocking this may help him, but every once and awhile we will need to man block and that's where he's got to improve.

This offense won't be great, mainly b/c of the QB spot and some other question marks. But, it will be much better than the 4-12 offense of last year - good enough to get us 4 more games, imo. I see a slow start but lots of improvement - so be patient.

The only reason this O won't be great is 1. Newness of O, 2. The ? marks on the OL. 3. A rookie RB starting for the first time. 4. Lack of continuity..i.e, changing O, blocking style, and WR's getting on the same page as QB in a new O, as they face different D's.

Being predictable didn't stop this D from being a top 10 year in and year out. But this year's secondary might. Our DL is a big ? to me right now. Even with Traylor's present and a healthy Chester, I only see Chester as a stud. I was hoping we replaced Zgonia with a stud as backup..Romeo is still on the team, but I don't know where he is in terms of ability. The rook is the rook.
The rest of the pickups we got in FA looks like pass rushers to me, if Traylor gets hurt and chester don't make it back, I see a very long year for this unit yet again.

I'm not sure if this isn't the strongest part of our team. Moore, Pope, Ayanbadejo, and Corey got a lot of valuable playing time last year, which makes this one of the strongest units on the team. Chrowder, if he works out just makes a strong unit even stronger. So losing Zach or Jr. isn't as devastating to me as in past years. So we agree that this unit is much improved, but for different reasons.

DB's - The injuries really hurt after the loss of Surtain. However, the style of D Saban will play will not put quite as much pressure on the CB's to line up man-to-man, like Wanny's D did. Hopefully, Madison and Tebucky will be able to lead the group effectively.

Agreed, I hope Y. Bell steps up after showing signs of great potential the last 2 years.

Finally, this team has too many question-marks to really succeed this year. Certainly, some of those Q-marks will be answered positively. But, when you have that many, the odds are they won't all get answered. We may not start fast, but I don't think this team will finish poorly (barring late season injuries).

Agreed, but I think it has to do more with new system than talent..except in in the secondary, that's where the question marks appear most to me.

I feel good about the team. Hopefully Mueller will find us a good QB in the next year or so, around whom the team can build.

hopefully QB is not neccessary, but db's and dt's are...maybe a LT based on this year's performance.
