Ok, I'm not one to normally start threads about each and every player who gets cut. I even searched this player, hoping that I wouldn't be the first to start a thread about him being a possibility. But, I was browsing ESPN this morning, and I read this weeks "Whispers from around the NFL" article. I think it's done by Pro Football Weekly, and it's an insider article(so I don't know if I should bother posting the link, it's on the NFL front page on ESPN).

Anyways, inside, it says how the Bengals have some really strong competition at the DL and LB positions. It then goes on to say that Caleb Miller (a 2004 3rd round pick, good size 6-3/225) could be the odd man out, and eventually let go.

Now I'm not saying we would go after him, or that I think we should for certain or anything. But from what I can tell, he'd be pretty good for depth behind Crowder, and could possibly even push Spragan if he pushed himself enough after getting accustomed to the system.

There are always suprise cuts, or at least players of good quality who wind up getting cut for various reasons. Do you guys think Caleb Miller, if cut could help this team? Or are there any other potential cuts(specific players, not positions, as RB is an obvious one) out there that you think Saban has his eye on?

(Also if you hate threads like this, I'm sorry, but there is also no need to bash me about it. If you feel inclined to do so, please keep your remarks to yourself. It's not like I go around every day posting threads like this.)

Sure, it wouldn't hurt to give the kid a look. I'm sure Saban could get another LB once the cuts are made.

yeah i have seen that guy a few times before and he obviously isnt to shabby i rekon he would certainly be worth a look and good be a possible upgrade on our roster

I'm not trying to bash you but...why do you think, even if we bring him in and he gets accustomed to the system, Miller would push Spragan for the starting job? I'm not sure about this but isn't Miller a weak side linebacker? He would have to move to the strong side to push Spragan.

Patriots | Beisel on the bubble?
Thu, 24 Aug 2006 06:11:18 -0700 Mike Reiss, of the Boston Globe, reports during the first week of training camp, New England Patriots LB Monty Beisel was working with the first-team defense unit alongside LB Tedy Bruschi. Now, Beisel could be in jeopardy of making the 53-man roster. Beisel's situation began to change Aug. 1, when he missed practice. Beisel was sidelined for five straight workouts, then came back for a stretch and played as a backup in the preseason opener. He then missed another string of practices, and the second preseason game, before returning to practice this week. "Not being on the field has definitely hurt me," he said.

Caleb Miller was a standout at Arkansas. Nick Saban knows damn well who he is. When we drafted Tony Bua, my Arkansas fan friend was like, why draft Bua? Should have gone for Caleb Miller.

Caleb's a little smallish...but the simple fact of the matter is he could be better ILB depth than Mike Labinjo, who currently looks like he'll make the team as 7th LB...

I didn't know if Miller was weakside. I figured if he showed qualities capable of playing there(if he worked at it, and pushed himself to get better), I think he has the size to play strong side.

He could be a good backup, but no way he challenges Spragan for a starting position. Plus it would take him several months to learn our complicated system. Couldn't hurt long term though.

Yea, I didn't mean he'd challenge for that starting spot this year, I meant next offseason. I figured it'd take too long this season for him to get enough work in to do that.

If he's anywhere close to the special teams player Bua was, I do believe Caleb could end up claimed if he gets cut...maybe not by us though.

Too small...Coach likes his backers to have size and speed; especially in the 3/4 set...Zach was the exception to his rule...(imho)

Its too early to speculate because there is no telling who may be on the cut lists when rosters are trimmed down. There may be some real surprizes there and I am sure Mueller and Saban will be watching them close. Whats that they say, one mans trash is another mans treasure.

I don't know how 6-3 225 lbs is too small. I thought that was prototypical size?

225 is on the small side, especially for a 6-3 LB. IMO, it's good size to me, but Saban usually like his backers in the 240 range.

I think you can toss away some of the more nitpicky size restrictions when we're talking about the 7th spot on the LB depth chart. More appropriate questions would be, can he play special teams, and can he play football when he gets on the field.

Remember, Jason Glenn was one of our backups last year. His size was not ideal. He was primarily special teams, and coverage.
