Well, here's how I saw it this week:
- Kenyan Drake has earned the starting RB job in 2018. He has been outstanding.
- Jakeem Grant, YOWZA. If he applies the same level of determination to improving his pass-catching that he did to his punt-handling, watch out. Of course, he would have needed extra-tall stilts to catch that 3rd and 24 pass...
- Really, really well executed screen passes today. That's two weeks in a row. Interesting. (I still hate them.)
- Jarvis Landry, stop fumbling. Kenny Stills, stop fumbling.
- Jay Cutler with another "Made a lot of good decisions, but a lot of bad throws" type of day.
- The pass rush didn't really show up today, and against Alex Smith, Travis Kelce, and Tyreek Hill, that's an ingredient that helps cook up disaster.
- The Dolphins defense looked bad today. Kansas City is one of the best scoring offenses in the NFL, and they did a good job of picking on Miami's defensive deficiencies. Most of the Chiefs' stalled drives were the result of them shooting themselves in the feet.
- On Tyreek Hill's big gain (the first one), he was moving toward the line of scrimmage at the snap. That's illegal motion!
- Off topic: Even though Miami's incredibly slim playoff hopes rested on the Bills losing, the replay review that took a touchdown away from Kelvin Benjamin in the New England/Buffalo game was completely absurd to me. Maybe Vince McMahon knows what he's doing in reviving the XFL. If people are going to watch football that's as fixed as professional wrestling, why not turn things over to the experts?
- Off topic: There is a rumor that UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen doesn't want to play for Cleveland and is considering going back for his senior year, or simply refusing to sign the contract if he is drafted by the Browns. Finally, someone smart enough to realize that it's better to lose one year of your professional career than waste 5+ years of your career -- and life -- in Cleveland.
- Cody Parkey finally missed one, but he's been great this season. Maat Haack has been awful. Sometimes you outsmart everyone, and sometimes you outsmart yourself.
- Late addendum to this post: Apparently, the official's response to Kenny Stills' complaints about the extremely lame offensive pass interference called against him was to say "I'm a twenty year vet. Twenty year vets don't make mistakes."
And that right there is why I will continue to piss and moan about the NFL's officiating. Unaccountable, untouchable, incompetent, and completely full of themselves. I'll stop short of crooked, but only because it's the holidays.
Merry Christmas, everyone.
