I was listening to the Finsiders podcast a couple of days ago and they were discussing the effect of Ndamukong Suh's actual performance this year versus the national media's perception that he underperformed. One of the factors mentioned in that perception was the inability of players around him to take advantage of his disrupting presence behind the line of scrimmage. The linebackers were mentioned, no big surprise to the casual fan, but there was also mention of the poor performance next to Suh by Earl Mitchell and Jordan Phillips. I think we all hope that Phillips improves greatly in year 2, but it still might be a good idea for the FO to add a quality veteran to the rotation.

A player that I have watched for a few years is Terrance "Pot Roast" Knighton. He is the epitome of a space eating tackle, and I believe his skill set would compliment Suh's penetrating style. Knighton doesn't push the pocket like Suh, but he has surprising lateral quickness at the point of attack. He's coming off a one year deal with the Redskins, and At 30 years old, I believe he would probably cost us about the same or less than Mitchell.

Wanted pot roast last year didnt happen...need a 2 down plugger dt...can probably be had for 1 year and $4 mil and if so do it

Need jordan phillips poa play insurance

Out of curiosity, what contract kind of contract did he sign with redskins? I think he will likely get a bit less than that contract if we can get him for our 2 year deal with the first year on the low with guarenteed money. Like others have said, it would be great to have insurance in case Phillips doesn't progress as fast as we hope.

I've pretty much been asking the same question about every prospective free agents to replace players on our current roster. Will they be cheaper and at least as effective?

I'd like Forte but I doubt we get him and Miller. I'd prefer Miller if the prices are anywhere near each other. I'm really interested in what kind of contract Miller will get.

I would be OK with passing on OV because I question his drive post-payday. I'd accept another one of the higher end pass rushers to replace him if OV is too pricey. Kinda what we did with the Clay-Cameron situation, even though it didnt work amazingly. I think it could still work for us if we make smart replacements.

According to Spotrac: Terrance Knighton signed a 1 year, $4,450,000 contract with the Washington Redskins, including a $2,000,000 signing bonus, $2,950,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $4,450,000

What's not to like about a DT who goes by "pot roast"? :)

Except we were supposed to already have our own Terrance Knighton in Jordan Philips.

Draft Analysis:

"Phillips has first-round ability all over him. He can dominate at the point of attack. He controls the run game. He reminds me of Terrance Knighton. People question his football character, which is why he's being selected in the second round and not in the first." -- Mike Mayock

Overview

Has started just 17 games since arriving at Oklahoma in 2011. In 2014, selected second-team All-Big 12, starting in all 13 games. Had 7 tackles against Clemson in Russell Athletic Bowl. Started in four games in 2013 before having season-ending back surgery. Played in 11 games in 2012, but did not start at any point and finished with 12 tackles. Was a redshirt in 2011. Selected Under Armour All-American and was the nation's No. 1-rated overall prospect as a senior at Towanda High School (Kan.). Took snaps on both sides of the ball in high school. Recorded 17 receptions for 400 yards and four touchdowns while adding two rushing touchdowns during his time in high school.

Analysis

Strengths Massive frame with long arms. Athletic lower body for a man his size. Read-and-react two-gap nose with ability to eat space and free linebackers. Uses length effectively and was able to split double teams as season wore on. Swim move for quick wins and trips into backfield when Sooners let him penetrate. Athletic with nimble feet and pursuit speed of a man much lighter. Should be able to carry additional muscle and girth.
Weaknesses Scouts consider him a flash player who can dominate a game but will disappear during stretches. Needs to play with better knee bend and lower pad level. Loses some leverage and becomes top-heavy wrestler at times. Not effective as pass rusher. Stalls out early and settles for looking to bat down passes. Doesn't crank up a consistent bull rush. Consistency of motor could be improved.

Draft Projection Round 1 or 2

Sources Tell Us "He has the body type and length to play in a 3-4 or 4-3 front, but there is no reason to move him from the nose. If he gets that motor going, he could be a dominant pro." -- AFC North scout

NFL Comparison Terrance Knighton

Bottom Line Nose tackle with desired height, weight and speed. Flashes talent necessary to project a ceiling as a dominant run stuffer best suited for a 3-4 defense. Phillips' ability to eat up blocks should help him earn a high grade, but it's his potential as a big athlete with above-average range for the position that could turn him into a Pro Bowl nose.

Still could be although phillips has more wiggle from a pass rush aspect

Phillips nickname should be "Roast Beef" at this point. Here's to hoping he improved dramatically next season.

Jordan Phillips was raw coming out of college, and certainly showed flashes; I'm not remotely concerned about him yet. That being said, if we could get Knighton in here reasonably priced? Absolutely.

Saw this on Forte this morning. I would assume he could be a possibility as my gut tells me Miller will leave for a better contract elsewhere. I wont count on him remaining healthy the whole season though

You hit on a good point. The play aside Suh at defensive tackle was very disappointing for Miami. I'm not sure how things will go in free agency, how much money the team can free up etc. But, the draft has some really good defensive tackles this year if the Dolphins want to go that route early.

I would have to think that one of the targets for Miami at #8 is A'Shawn Robinson from Alabama. I love his upside as an all-around talent, but he is most notably a run stopper at this point in his development.

Phillips obviously isn't there yet. He may develop, but right now Phillips is a flash player and more of a rotational guy IMO.

I'm all for it. Another great mentor for Phillips as well. DT is a tough transition from college to NFL. It can take a little time for them to develop. I just want to see progression this year.

So you want to waste our valuable first round pick on another dt? Because they pretty much all always need developed. I'd be f***ing pissed if that was a pick
