Dolphins center Mike Pouncey, due $7.4 million in the final season of his contract, said Monday he was left with the impression that the Dolphins want to work out a multiyear deal this offseason. “I think I’ll be a Dolphin for a long time,” he said after playing Jason Taylor's charity golf tournament…

The Dolphins haven’t told him if he’s moving back to center, but he told them he wants to do that and everyone believes it’s likely…

Pouncey said he would like the Dolphins to sign “a really good veteran guard” and is recommending San Francisco impending free agent Mike Iupati. "Good player," he said. Pouncey said playing alongside a quality guard makes the game easier.

Awesome that he'd say that. And saying we need better guards. Glad he's not a Philbin drone just saying "we have some good guys on the team" Pouncey knows what's wrong ha.

HEY... Mike Iupati... my guy!!!

two hard working guys that communicate well

Imagine picking up Iupati and Turner coming to his own.. Pretty dang good line for a while

the thing with Iupati people have stated here, is that he is a sub par pass blocker... and at guard we are definitely looking for one. also he isnt the most lateral run blocker either, though he is a beast and mauler in run blocking all and all. i think he would still be a great addition and could become a solid pass blocker next to pouncey as a unit.... i think he would be an upgrade for what we have now.

I'd love for Pouncey to play next to Iupati... in SF.

Good football player. Extended him and gain some cap room in the short-term.

Pouncey is a better player than talent evaluator. While Iupati is a good player, he would not be the best free agent guard fit for this team. Orlando Franklin would be.

I like Iupati a lot. Just think for the money he will command we could use our resources more wisely with a better fit. I would not hate the signing though, he would bring some needed toughness to our interior for sure.

Could Pouncey maybe be doing some recruiting? Eh, what am I thinking, Pouncey probably isn't that savvy.

LT - Albert
LG - Franklin
C - Pouncey
RG - Turner
RT - James

In the next few days I expect Joel Segal, the agent for center Mike Pouncey, to meet with the Dolphins and talk about a new contract for his client.

This is going to happen this offseason, folks.

Why do I know this?

Well, I know Segal, based in New York, and new Dolphins executive vice president for football operation Mike Tannenbaum have worked on multiple deals in the past. I know they have a high degree of respect for one another. I know the two typically get things done when both are of the mind to do so.

And both are of the mind that Pouncey's future is with the Dolphins.

And both believe it is in their best interest to get this done.

Pouncey, due $7.4 million for 2015, wants to be among the highest paid centers in the NFL. And that means he wants to be in the same neighborhood as his brother Maurkice Pouncey, who last June signed a five-year contract extension worth $44,136,625 with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Dolphins, on the other hand, would like to not carry a $7.4 million cap number for Pouncey this year. They do that by, for example, giving Pouncey a $12 million signing bonus that prorates over the next five years at $2.4 million per season. If the team adds Pouncey's required minimum salary of $745,000 for 2015, his cap number would be $3.145.

That's a lot more palatable for the salary cap strapped Dolphins than $7.4 million.

Why would Pouncey go for that? Because he's getting a lump sum check for $12 million (minus federal tax) that's why. And $12 million is more than $7.4 million.
That's why a source close to Pouncey told me recently a new deal "shouldn't be too hard."

I've been told the Dolphins agree.

So it is only a matter of time.
