Several FinHeaven board members have been critical of the Adam Gase hire, which makes sense given how burned the fans and players have been by horrific coaching and even more horrific decision-making by the gargoyle known as Stephen Ross. That said, don't sleep on the significance of this Adam Gase hire. He is young, intelligent, respected, shows very little in the way of favoritism to underperforming players, and tailors his schemes to his players instead of the other way around (cough, Philbin, cough, Lazor, cough, Coyle, cough).
But by and large you could argue one of Gase's biggest positive attributes is his ability to communicate. I've been watching his press conferences for years because they actually SAY SOMETHING. Even when his head coaches were doing that drivel coach speak of "We just gotta win" and "We'll go back and look at the tape" (a Joe Philbin favorite), Adam Gase was specifically discussing how defensive schemes had been exploited, how he was tailoring his offense to each individual player, and even making comedic references to Bull Durham and Monty Python. With the smart, measured, approachable way that he speaks he actually reminds me a lot more of Chad Pennington than your run of the mill head coach. For a young team needing direction, this type of personality will make a big difference.
To put his ability to communicate in "Dolphins" terms we can wrap our minds around: Tony Sparano was like some meathead uncle we had, who grunted out nothingspeak derived from motivational posters and whose answer to performing better was, "We just gotta win". Joe Philbin was like a senile-sounding grandpa we had, who stared confusingly with his mouth agape at the young whippersnappers running around him, stuttering through cue cards from Dawn Aponte that this team just needed to "not turn the ball over"...Adam Gase is much more the studied tactician, who comes across as that friend you had in college that was WAY smarter than you were, but was still nice and humble enough to grab a beer with you after class. He is going to work with his coordinators to attempt to outsmart his opponents, and will hold his players accountable for executing those gameplans.
Anyhoo, some food for thought as we await our new head coach stepping to the podium. Time will tell if this team performs better...but we at least will SOUND SMARTER in an attempt to be less of an embarrassment as a franchise...(glances at Stephen Ross)...well, at least the head coach will.
