So, I got to watch the game last night, and I have to say, that I really liked what I saw out of our first team, and our second team wasn't as bad as I thought it would be...they were playing against Jacksonville's starters after all. Through the whole thing, though, a couple of players stood out to me...some positive, some negative. Now, this isn't an in depth analysis, just what immediately stood out to me.

Positives:

1. Fred Russel. Where did this guy come from? He had one dropped pass (thrown behind him) but was money on everything else. This guy really earned some serious consideration. If he can do it consistantly, he could be very good for us.

2. Kay Jay Harris. This guy showed good awareness and power. Not sure how he would perform with the first team, but he might be pressing Minor for that third spot.

3. Wes Welker. While not a big factor in the passing game, he continues to prove himself as a return man. I believed in him last year, and it looks like he want's to pick up right where he left off.

4. Zach Thomas. Goes without saying.

5. Kevin Carter. A fine job.

Honorable mentions: Joey Harrington, Cleo Lemon, and Jason Allen. These guys didn't dissapoint, but didn't rise above, either. They performed about how I expected they would.

Negatives:

1. Will Allen. Out of position and got burnt. New to the system and has plenty of time to catch up, but obviously needs some additional time and training to get into the system.

2. Hagan. I have heard alot of hype, but the only thing he accomplished was an offensive pass interference call. Expected more. He is still new, and is still a rookie. Welker's spot is safe for now.

3. Wade Smith. Penalties. 'Nuff Said.

4. Marcus Vick. Didn't get as many opportunities as I would have liked to see, but didn't really stand out with the ones he had.

5. Cornerback Mitchel (Shirdonya?). Must be feeling a little crispy. Definitely needs more coaching.

Overall, lots of positives, and there is a lot of time to work on the negatives. I really like the direction this year :cooldude:

Cliff Russell is who you're thinking of. Fred was cut last year or maybe two years ago, I can't quite recall.

Is Cliff Russell the receiver that's been reported to be catching everything thrown his way during training camp? Regardless I believe the guy made at the very least an opening statement in his case for a roster spot with his performance Saturday night. Perhaps you subconsciously called him Fred to cover the one glaring omission from your positives list: Fred Evans. The guy played his water-polo-loving, seventh round arse off against Jacksonville's first and second teamers. He was a force and I really hope Big Daddy's signing doesn't jeopardize Fredrick's roster spot in any way. With Manny Wright now on the MUP (Mentally Unable to Perform) List it should open up a spot for Fred. After Saturday night's performance there's no way the guy clears waivers.

Yeah I don't think Vick could be labled as a negative. He had some tough passes thrown his way, but looked fearless going down the middle. Russel definitely impressed, especially after that dropped pass.

I like KJ harris, was impressed by his effort.

Good call, guys. My bad on the "Fred" instead of "Cliff"...must be a subliminal thing for me. And Maggot is correct...I forgot to mention Evans, who did indeed impress.

I didn't list Vick as a negative because I thought he was terrible. I listed Vick in the negative column because he has been hyped to the extreme on this site, yet I remember him making one good catch and not much else. I expected a little more from a guy many have stated will likely steal Welker's spot. It is preseason game 1...I'm not judging any of these guys too harshly, but I definitely didn't see the hype. Gibson might have had an even better night than Vick, and he was being thrown to by Berlin, who looked clueless.

Like I said, this isn't an "in depth" breakdown, just my observations from what stood out to me at midnight.

It's ONE preseason game.....You can't give up on Hagan this quickly. He is going to be a great receiver for us.

russel did a very good job. i hope we keep fred evans and vickerson. keith newman - i was expecting to see more from him. Cleo Lemon did a very good job, every possesion he had he led the team into scoring territory. the one he didnt end up getting was because of a false start during the field goal. Gibson looked good, teeyo johnson was extremely dissapointing. Vick we will have tosee more of to be sure of anyting. Aromashado looked good returning. itll be interesting to see how kelly campbell plays when he gets back. people keep saying he might be the odd guy out but i think not, he is dauntes buddy, has some chemistry on the long ball with daute

I still consider Will Allen's play being burnt a matter of second/thrid string guys playing with him at that point. No pass rush which gave "whatyoutalkinboutwillis" all the time in the world. Will Allen was playing great until that moment. Not that the guy doesnt deserve some raggin on but its preseason and some things are just obvious. If he hadnt made any plays before that, then its justified to put him at a negative, but playing with guys who wont even be here in a few weeks or will only see part time action this year is not something to worry about. Love the way Goodman plays the recievers.

Here is my postitives:

Fred Evans
1st string Oline
No injuries
Will Allen played lights out, until second team in there
Joey Harrington and Cleo Lemon We are set at QB no doubt. (minus fumbes by JH but the real fumble was really because new center came in)
the punter gets it
3rd down conversions and ball control with running game

I saw what I wanted to see... Our 1st unit DOMINATING there 1st unit!!

One thing I did see was them kick away from him during punts. I can't remember someone doing that for Welker.

:dolphins: First off all imo I thought Cliff Russel was the stand out of the game for us on offense everyone was talking about Hagan or devin or vick and russel realy showd that poeple should be talking about him. I was in shock at how bad Joey Harrington looked especialy on the one play where he dribbled the ball Daunte needs to help that boy out or it will be Lemon at 2.

P.S. I never want to see Brock Berlin Near the feild again.
