So this was our bet... Primetime would take 2 teams (US and Costa Rica) and I would take 4 teams (Ukraine, Croatia, Sweden, and the Netherlands) if any of my four teams ended up worse athan any of his two teams then I lost, and obviously if viceversa he would loose.

So this is what ended up happening:

Ukraine, Sweden and the Netherlands managed to get to round 2. Croatia stayed in the same round as the US and Costa Rica... But:

Costa Rica 0 points -6 Goal Difference.

USA 1 Point -4 GD

Croatia 2 points -1 GD

So it is my feeling that I have won this bet, and Primetime must remove Zidane's balding mutt from his avatar and put a jets avatar there, and then very nicely remove his sig and look for a wonderfull goal by Borgetti on the US team...

But since he disagrees, then I figured I would make a poll...
 
Sounds to me like Quelonio wins (incedently Prime what the hell were you thinking!?!?!)
 
I'd say, as you had 4 teams to his 2, then any goal difference advantage should be negated and that you should both agree to a noble tie and have PRO Jets avatars for 1 month, with regular updates declaring your love for Rich Kotite, Al Toon and Victor Green.

Besides your will to make fun of us wearing matching jets avys... I really dont get your rationale as to why the goal difference advantage (and the points mind you) should be negated.

Cute... coming from mathematics, I could nitpick and say you stated your bet in such a way that it's possible both of you win (though whether that happened in this case is another story, but let me explain).

Since you say if ANY of your teams does worse than ANY of his, or vice versa, it's possible one of your teams does worse than one of his, and one of his (maybe another one) does worse than one of yours, leading both to claim victory. I guess you should have stated: "Whoever picked the team that did worst loses."

Anyway, in THIS case, that may not matter. When FIFA comes out with the ranking of the teams just for this WC, the US and Costa Rica will be ranked below every team that reached the 2nd round and also below Croatia because of the points.

Also, Costa Rica and the US were last in their respective groups while Croatia was not, so that is another reason to list Croatia above the other two. You also bring up goal differential in which Croatia did better.

So, I think for Prime Time to make an argument for Croatia not doing as well as either the US or Costa Rica (in which case both of you would win because of that wording), he needs to come up with some stat that is used to measure the strength of teams in this WC (and only in the WC) where Croatia did worse than the US or CR.

I don't see what that stat would be, so I'll say PT lost this one. In any case, because of the wording of the bet, Quelonio can't lose (since the US and CR did worse than at least one of Quelonio's teams: Netherlands).

Actually, there is a rationale behind Boomer's statement on negating goal-differential. The reason is simple: the more teams there are in your set of teams, the greater the likelihood the worst goal-differential you will see in the set is worse than the worst seen in a smaller set.

So, yes it does make sense to negate goal-differential. But, even without that stat, the total points stat and where the teams ended up in their group and the FIFA ranking of WC teams based only on WC performance all speak in your favor.

However, on the avatar situation, why with both as Dolphins fans would one have to have a Jets avatar? I suggest putting something else, like maybe a pic of a geek, like the waving one Boomer posted a while back.

Regardless of how many teams anybody was allowed to take the fact that the bet against the dutch, swedes and Ukraine was made is rather interesting. Technically even croatia was anticipated to move on. Costa Rica had 0 chances in a group in which Germany and Poland were expected to advance. Even Ecuador was ahead of the bets vs Costa Rica.

The bet is pretty clear: PT lost (sorry PT)

PS to Boomer: the goal difference is obsolete anyways since CR has 0 points and croatia has 2 points.

But points are first tiebreaker....CR 0, US 1, Croatia 2. Not only did only 1 team finish worse than Qs all four teams, BOTH of PTs teams finished worse.

I'll go through with it, I don't care, it is afterall just a sig and avatar for a week. We just never said "stats are the tiebreaker", we just said who does better etc. That is why I claimed not to lose, but I'll go forward with it. Quelonio find me a sig of Borgettti scoring.
