I have been thinking about this and I think there is a really big problem with this means of obtaining a number one pick if Jake Long is the guy we would like.

I think the door has been left wide open to another team (St. Louis for example) to call Long and offer the same kind of (or even more) money for being the second overall. With recent rumors that Long doesn't want Miami it wouldn't be outrageous to think that this scenerio had happened.

Now if the Dolphins want one of several guys the same amount then it works fine. What if this backfires on Long, Long, and Gholston? If they want another guy just as much then it doesn't matter.

If there is someone they really want (like I want Jake on our team) then this may end up being a very poor strategy.

I never thought of that, but i can kinda see that maybe happening

Only the team with the number one pick can talk to players about a contract for that very reason. Not to mention I think the owners are banning toghther to slow down the cost of signing the top pick. So if long doesnt agree to our contract bill will get the next on our list and Long will drop. The Rams will then sign Dorsey because they don't want to be the team to try to sign long knowing he's going to want 1st pick money. I could see Long dropping to 5 at KC and him not making anywhere near the money he could make at 1.

I just hope we can trade down. I would be willing to just give the Cowboys the #1 overall pick for their two first rounders plus a halfway decent Cowboy's player....I know they won't part with MBIII, but I would still try to work a deal with them.

IMO this whole lowballing strategy could get ugly. I agree that the price of the #1 has gotten way out of hand but I don't know if this is the right way to approach it. Parcells fired the first shot but now the players & agents can counter by banning together and no one signing any of our offers. Also by Parcells choosing to put the target on our back it could cause many players to not want to play for us and the agents of any players we do draft may intentionally hold out on their contracts to fire back at Bill. One thing it does tell me is that Parcells & Co. must not think too highly of any of the top talent of this years draft by choosing to execute this plan. Hopefully the strategy works and we get who we want at a reasonable price; it will be interesting to see how things pan out.

I didnt hear about this. Link?

I dont think other teams can negotiate until the first team with the #1 pick has done so. That would be like putting the horse before the carriage. Besides, if we want Long, there really is nothing STL can do from stopping us from drafting him. Look at Eli, he said before the draft he did not want to play in SD and they drafted im anyways.

some one can whisper in the rams or falcons ear
even though they cant "negotiate" with any player
before the 1st over all pic has.

i just have a feeling that BP is chumming for trade
partners and he doenst want ANY of the players that
most have so popular on there boards and mocks.

i still say, dont be suprised to see a completely out
of the blue card come to the podium on draft day
should we keep the pic.

when the thread was made about the finz being
interested in DERRIK HARVEY a couple days back,
i know many dismissed that right away.

i wouldnt. and harvey is going to be a great player.

he is one, or maybe even the best pass rusher in this draft.

and dont forget ryan. they asked for every throw he ever made
and spent a lot of time with him and then..... hes a ghost!

i dont think any of the longs or gholstons is tops on bills list. its
all a smoke screen. and finaly..... A GOOD ONE!!!

Because he screwed up the interview and was pressing his throws. Hes a ghost because we dont want him..

IMO its either going to be Long or Gholston... I dont know where CL went...

I've gotten to the point where I don't care anymore who we take #1. I think this draft will be defined more by who we take with those two #2s and #3.

I feel you, but whoever we pick at #1 overall could greatly effect who we take in rounds 2 and 3. If Jake Long is the pick we're obviously not going to take a tackle with pick #32. If anyone other than Jake Long is the pick they are almost forced to take the best available Offensive tackle at #32 because right now they have Vernon Carey, and then NOTHING at the tackle position and last I checked you need 2 starters at Tackle on Offense. Also if the pick is Gholston or Chris then Miami probably won't be taking a DE/OLB with their next 3 picks.

Yes, only the #1 team can talk contract with a player. Any other team doing so would be tampering.

I like this thought have for some time, but who do they part with? Maybe a CB????

Cannot happen since it is against league policy for teams other than the club with the first pick in the draft to negotiate with and sign players before selecting them.

Now as far as I read the rule the other teams cannot negotiate or sign draftees other than us.

And trust me, no one will break or bend that rule and risk losing the pick entirely. It is just not worth it.

We will be fine.

Yes and by doing so the said team, The Rams, could be fined and or lose a draft pick in the process. Many teams are going to be more cautious with tampering because of San Fran losing a pick because of tampering.
